Developed by two dietitians, Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch, in 1995, intuitive eating is a mind-body health approach that makes YOU the expert of your body and its needs. Afraid of losing control around certain foods? It’s probably not a “lack of willpower” or some fundamental flaw in your genetic code. It’s biology. When food is restricted for almost any reason (dieting, food insecurity, famine), our body thinks it’s starving, and to protect us, revs up our hunger and heightens our internal rewards system for obtaining food, triggering cravings.

After we’ve been on a few diets, our brains adapt, and start to trigger cravings earlier and more intensely.

So what do we do?
1. Reflect after “giving in” to a craving. What’s happening emotionally right now?
2. Have self compassion and understanding.
3. Break the Cycle. You don’t need to view this as a reason you can’t be trusted around food. Restricting or avoiding certain foods is what often leads to overeating.
