Sweetser's Support ME Peer Center

Come as you are. We’ll meet you there. The center is the sixth of its kind in Maine and the only peer center serving the Midcoast. to 4:30 p.m.

Our Peer Center provides free, walk-in peer support for individuals experiencing mental health challenges, life stress, and trauma. Sweetser has officially opened its SupportME Peer Center in Brunswick, offering a free, no-judgment community resource for Mainers who are struggling with mental health or substance use. Located at 329 Bath Road next to Sweetser's Hope & Healing Center, the facility will serve residents in Brunswick and throughout Sagadahoc, Knox, Waldo, and Lincoln Counties. The purpose of a peer center is to create a welcoming, judgment-free space where people come together to connect, share, and support one another at all stages of their recovery journey. The center offers daily peer-run groups, life skills workshops, and one-on-one support, all staffed by trained peer support specialists, each of whom have their own personal connection to mental health or substance use challenges. The facility does not require any payment or insurance. Community members don't even need to provide their full name. The philosophy here is truly, “Come as you are.”

Happy Friday! Together with our friends at Sexual Assault Support Services of Midcoast Maine we are looking towards hosting a new program called the Relationship Repair Cafe: a space where we can freely explore all types of relationships; how they can feel joyous as well as complicated; how people can make us feel safe, but can also hurt us. It will be a session with both structured and unstructured activities to help facilitate conversations around relationships. Today at the center we have Community Game and Movie Day all day long (showing today: Flight of the Conchords Season 1, part 2), Mindfulness group at 10:30, Performance for Peers at 12, and Tabletop Roleplaying after hours at 5:30. Have a great weekend!

On August 28, the peer center staff celebrated the 30th anniversary of intentional peer support and the 20th anniversary of IPS in Maine with other intentional peer support specialists from across the state. It was a lovely day, and we had a great time reconnecting with our peers in other organizations as we talked about the past and future of IPS!

Today at the center we have Beyond the System (medical trauma) at 10:30, General Support group at 12, Community Meeting at 1:30, and Pet Grief group at 3.

Today marks the third annual , a national Day of Action dedicated to raising awareness of the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. The message is simple but powerful: You are not alone, and your reason to reach out is reason enough.

Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, experiencing emotional distress, facing a substance use challenge, worried about someone you love, or simply need someone to talk to, free and confidential support is available 24/7.

Calls from Maine are answered by the Maine Crisis Line, helping Mainers access support close to home. Often, individuals are connected to local providers like Sweetser, Maine’s largest provider of mobile crisis services.

Since its launch in July 2022, the 988 Lifeline has received more than 26 million calls, texts, and online chats, each one representing someone who chose to reach out.
