Barbara Ann Miller Powell

Barbara Ann Miller Powell, 91, of Salem, VA, passed away May 29, 2026. Born September 2, 1934, she was known for her strong Christian faith, love for her family and friends, and her beautiful smile. Barbara graduated from Effinger High School in 1953, married, and raised her family in Buchanan, VA. She was a member of Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church for many years.

Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Clarence and Ethel Miller; twin brothers, Matthew and Melvin Miller; brother, Clarence Miller, Jr.; and one sister, Irene Johnston.

Also preceding her in death her husband, T.R. “Jiggs” Powell; two sons, Roger (Eddie) Powell, W.C. Powell; and daughter, Brenda Powell, all of Buchanan.

Barbara is survived by her daughters, Virginia Brasher of Blacksburg and Tracy Goodwin of Roanoke; son-in-law, Jeff Goodwin; grandchildren, Whitney Goodwin, Caleb Goodwin, Kasey Parker (John), and Alison Thomasson (Alex); two great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Jacob Thomasson. Also left to mourn her loss are numerous nieces and nephews and a large host of friends.

A viewing will be held from 1-1:45 pm on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 2 pm in Roaring Run Cemetery in Botetourt County with Rev. Doris Hedrick officiating.

Robert "Bobby" Eugene McKinney

Robert “Bobby” Eugene McKinney, 62, of Glasgow, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 28, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Acie and Wanda; brother, Ray; mothers-in-law, RuVelva Meeks and Joannie Camp; and brother-in-law, Kevin Camp.

Bobby was a JRHS 1982 graduate, a veteran of the US Army, and a hardworking man at James River Limestone Quarry, Over Road Truck Driver, VFC, and C&S Disposal, plus fitting in part-time jobs as a security guard and bus driver for RCHS.

Survivors include his wife of 32 years, Valerie; sons, Ryan (Sarah), Brandon, Kyler, and Matthew; daughter, Holly; grandchildren, Wilson and Aurora; brothers, Timmy and David; sister, Pam; fathers-in-law, Kenneth Camp and Mike Meeks; sisters-in-law, Amanda Camp, Jennifer (Dave) Seabrook, Shannon (Corky) Garrett; brother-in-law, Jeff Hanson; and 16 nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 1-2 pm on Saturday, June 6, 2026, with services at 2 pm in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home with Pastor Mason Jordan officiating. Interment will follow in Fairview Cemetery.

Bobby leaves behind his legacy of love for the outdoors, hunting, and having spent several years coaching youth football and baseball for Rockbridge Area Recreation. He attended Natural Bridge Baptist Church, where he was a trustee, groundskeeper, and cemetery caretaker. He enjoyed being involved with youth activities, VBS, and helping on the Glasgow Christmas parade floats. He deeply cared for his church family. He loved and served God, his country, his family, and his community…..he will be greatly missed.

Barbara Ellen Larch Hayes, 93, of Buchanan, passed away Wednesday, May 20, 2026 in Newport, NC. She was preceded in death by her parents, James John Larch and Elvira Julia Lester Larch; husband, Harold William Hayes Jr.; sons, James Harold Hayes and Robert Martin Hayes: sisters, Jacqueline Grimes, Patricia Ann Camper, and Mary Joan Hoppe. Barbara loved flowers of all types, walking, her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Janice and Dickie Sprinkle of Buchanan; sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Clare Hayes of Mercersburg, PA, Randall and Donna Hayes of Harkers Island, NC; sister, James Julia Harris of Buchanan; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. Roxanna Nicole Carter, 41, formerly of Buchanan passed away Saturday, May 9, 2026. She was preceded in death by her mother, Brenda Hearn, father, Jr Carter, and grandmother, Janie Deacon.

She is survived by her husband, Daniel Hoyt; children, Tyler Crabb, Hailey Hoyt, and Nathaniel Hoyt; grandfather, Kenton Deacon; and numerous other family members.

Shelby Jean Spangler Gore, 86, of Buchanan, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 17, 2026. She was preceded in death by her parents, Bernard Allen Spangler and Louise Alena Welch Spangler; her husband, William Samuel Gore; sister and brother-in-law, June and Bobby Aaron.

Shelby lived her life as a devoted wife, mother, and especially loved being a grandmother. She was an active member of Springwood Baptist church since childhood and truly was a devoted child of God. She also spent time working at the Burris store in Buchanan and loved her coworkers there and enjoyed meeting patrons from the Buchanan community.

Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael Gore, Dale and Martha Williams Gore, Marc and Shawna Rader Gore; grandchildren, Chris and Jamie Gore, Tyler and Keyndal Gore, Josie Gore, Tanner Gore, and Will Gore; great-grandchildren, Barrett Michael Gore and Berkley Ann Gore.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, from 1 to 2 pm in Springwood Baptist Church, 88 Copps Hill Road, Buchanan. Shelby’s funeral service will follow at 2:00 pm. Interment will follow in the Church Cemetery.

The family appreciates all of the support through calls, cards, and prayers from the community throughout her illness. Will Henry Duke, 80, of Buchanan, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 18, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred B. Duke and Pauline B. Duke; brothers, JB Duke (Sally), Dewey Duke, and Tommy Duke (Violet); sisters, Geneva Duke, Viola Duke, and Earcel Wright; and brother-in-law, Jackie Markham.

He was an equipment operator for over 45 years at Aaron J Conner Construction. He was also an avid gardener, enjoyed spending time at North Star Restaurant at the “round table”, and was a deer hunter.

Left to cherish Will’s memory are his wife of 62 years, Margaret Ann Duke; daughters, Donna Wilson (Harry), Ann Marie “Cricket” Duke, and Missy Campbell (Kevin); grandchildren, Bradley Hedrick, DJ Fowler, Emma Campbell, and Lauryn Campbell; great-grandchildren, Bradley Pennington and Alayna Pennington, sister, Madeline “Bugs” Markham; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Carlton Glenn Rieley

Carlton Glenn Rieley, 90, of Fincastle, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 9, 2026. He was preceded in death by his parents, Marshall D. Rieley and China Kessler Rieley.

Glenn was the type to never sit still. He was a 3rd-generation orchardist at Rieley’s Orchard. He enjoyed jigsaw puzzles, was an avid reader, and even painted some.

He was a dedicated member of Trinity Church of the Brethren. He served as a deacon, a trustee, and a choir member. He also overlooked Trinity Cemetery, where he worked assisting many families during hard times.

Left to cherish Glenn’s memory are his wife of 62 years, Armeda Jean McClung Rieley; son, Carlton Alan Rieley, of Burlington, NC.; daughter, Dina Jean Rieley, of Daleville, VA.; sister, Peggy Jane Rieley Jessee, of Christiansburg, VA.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, from 5 to 7 pm in the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home. A funeral service will follow on Thursday, May 14, 2026, at 11 am, with Pastor Anne Mitchell officiating. Interment will follow in Trinity Cemetery.

David Gaunt Thompson

David Gaunt Thompson, 75, of Eagle Rock, Virginia, formerly of Harleysville, Pennsylvania, went home to be with the Lord on April 27, 2026. He passed peacefully while at home with his wife and daughters by his side.

Dave was raised in Harleysville, Pennsylvania. In 1983, he and his family relocated to Eagle Rock, Virginia. Dave suffered a devastating log-cutting accident 26 years ago in December 2000, and his life was forever changed due to his injuries. He designed and created ways to live as independently as possible as a paraplegic, while continuing to accomplish the work and responsibilities at home. He accomplished this with remarkable determination and strength. He was admired and respected by all who knew him for his resilience, ingenuity, and fighting spirit. Dave's body finally gave in after the many medical challenges he faced.

He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Pamella Gehlert Thompson (Pam), and by his three beloved daughters: Tamela Denise Thompson Steger (Tammie) and her spouse, Jody; Shauna Lee Thompson Jones and her spouse, Brent; and Kelly Ann Thompson Miller and her spouse, Ed. He was also blessed with seven grandchildren, who added great joy to his life.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Harold Thompson Sr. and Elizabeth Dorothy Morrison Thompson; and by his sister, Linda Dorothy Thompson-Tressler (Lindy) (survived by partner, Romy).

He is also survived by his siblings: Robert Harold Thompson Jr. (Skip) and his spouse, Joyce; William Rawdon Thompson (Bill) and his spouse, Susan; Cynthia Elizabeth Thompson Bartholomew (Cindy) and her spouse, Nick; and Colleen Mary Thompson Goodman.

Dave was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed shooting and mastering the art of bow hunting. While living in Pennsylvania, he owned and operated a siding and roofing business. After moving to Virginia, he worked for Utility Line Equipment in Roanoke and later at the Roanoke Cement Plant.

A memorial gathering to honor Dave's life will be held at the Buchanan Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 6, 2026, from 6 to 8 pm.

Mary Joan Hoppe, 88, of Buchanan, Virginia, went peacefully to the Lord on Wednesday, April 22, 2026. She was preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Clifford E. Hoppe; parents, James J. Larch and Elvira J. Larch; and granddaughter, Bethany.

The love, pride, and joy of her life were her family. She is survived by her son, Vincent (Heather); daughter, Brenda (Chip); grandchildren, Travis (Brittany), Bryan (Courtney), and Dalton (Jo); and great-grandchildren, Aspen, Jovie, Sutton, Emory, Briar, Olive, Benjamen, and Archer.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Charles Wyatt Epperly, Jr.

Charles “Charlie” Wyatt Epperly, Jr., 85, of Daleville, Virginia, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 20, 2026. Born in Montgomery County, VA, to the late Charles W. Epperly, Sr. and Ernestine Helms Epperly. He is also preceded in death by his sister, Delores Epperly.

Charles worked as a welder for 29 and a half years at Norfolk Southern, where he retired in 1992. He enjoyed being outdoors and working in his garden. He loved that he was able to build a house in 1998, which was a dream of his for 35 years. He also enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

He was known as quite a character and would cut up with anyone who would listen.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Linda C. Epperly; sons, Stephen Epperly (Karen), and Christopher Epperly; grandchildren, Connor Epperly (Ivan), Piper Epperly, Skylar Ganey (Connor), Charlie Epperly (Sarah), and Andon Epperly; great-grandchildren, Alexi and Aiden; sisters, Serita Fry, Tressia Detrick, Willa Angle; and numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at the Botetourt Chapel of Botetourt Funeral Home, with Pastor David Jones officiating.
