"Forester took the interim job at St. Joseph’s Hospital in March, fully expecting to hand it off to a permanent replacement.

“If you’d asked me five months ago, I would have said that I’m here to help. I’ll get us through to the next president,” he said.

Then he started walking the halls, meeting with staff and exploring the Upshur County community.

“Everybody wants to do a good job here, you can tell,” he said. “A good hospital has a strong performance improvement process, and people who are engaged in that. That is certainly the case here at St. Joseph’s Hospital.”

Almost immediately, Forester got a vibe about the hospital — a good one.

“The interactions with staff members and patients have all been very, very positive,” he said. “The hospital is extremely clean and well taken care of.”

People around the community started asking Forester why he didn’t just stay.

“I started to fall in love with the hospital and fall in love with the staff,” he said. “As things got more involved and I started working more closely with the employees here and being a part of the community, it became clear to me that this was the path I was supposed to take.”

WVU Medicine made it official July 30."

John Forester came to St. Joseph’s Hospital as an interim leader. Inspired by the hospital's committed staff and potential, the veteran WVU Medicine executive will now stay and build its next chapter as the permanent president and CEO.

🍝 REMINDER: Stronger Together Community Dinner is THIS FRIDAY!

Join us Friday, August 21, from 4–6 p.m. at The Daily Grind Event Hall in Buckhannon for a FREE Community Spaghetti Dinner hosted by WVU Medicine St. Joseph’s Hospital and The Daily Grind!

This dinner is our way of saying thank you to the countless volunteers who stepped up and gave so much of their time, energy and hearts during and after the July flooding.

We also warmly invite anyone who was personally impacted by the flooding to join us. No registration is needed - simply come, enjoy a meal and spend some time with neighbors and friends as our community continues to recover together.

Registration is still open for the Healthy Hero Hustle 5K Run/Walk and Community Health Fair, sponsored by WVU Medicine St. Joseph's Hospital and West Virginia Wesleyan College, on September 19, 2026.

The race itself starts at the fountain loop at WVWC and is professionally timed by the Appalachian Timing Group. Our overall winners (overall 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place for both male and female) will receive a Healthy Hero Hustle logo mug (handmade by MUD Ceramics in Thomas, WV) and a plaque. Participants also have the opportunity to purchase a mug, while supplies last, for $25.
