🦇 A Bat in the House? Know What to Do

Bats are an important part of Michigan’s ecosystem, but they can also carry rabies. The good news: rabies is preventable, and simply seeing a bat does not mean you have been exposed.

Because bat bites can be very small and sometimes difficult to detect, it’s important to know what to do if you find a bat in your home.

If you have had direct contact with a bat — or wake up and find a bat in a room where someone was sleeping:

• Do not immediately release the bat if it can be safely contained. It may need to be tested.
• Avoid touching the bat with bare hands.
• Contact your local health department for guidance. They can help determine whether the bat should be tested and whether any additional medical care is recommended.
• If you were bitten or scratched, wash the area thoroughly and seek medical attention.

Not every encounter with a bat requires rabies treatment. The circumstances of the contact matter, which is why having the situation evaluated is important.

🐾 And don't forget your pets! Keeping dogs, cats and other eligible pets current on their rabies vaccinations helps protect them and your family.

Be aware, not afraid. Knowing what to do after possible bat contact can help you respond safely and appropriately.

✨ A New Chapter in Our Care Management Team ✨

Northern Pines Health Center would like to share an important update with our patients and community.

As many of you know, April Marsh has served as our Complex Care Manager with dedication, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to our patients. We are incredibly grateful for the care she has provided and the relationships she has built over the years. While we are sad to see her go, we are excited for April and her family as they begin a new adventure in Arizona. Please join us in thanking April for everything she has done for our patients and our practice, and in wishing her all the best in this next chapter!

We are also thrilled to welcome Danielle Maclean, RN, BSN, who will be taking over as our new Complex Care Manager.

Danielle earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Psychology from Michigan State University and brings six years of nursing experience in home health, behavioral health, and disability services. She is passionate about providing compassionate, person-centered care that addresses the whole individual and is dedicated to helping patients achieve healing, resilience, and long-term wellness.

Outside of nursing, Danielle enjoys spending time outdoors, reading, crafting, and making memories with family and friends.

We know transitions can bring questions, and we want to reassure our patients that Danielle is exceptionally qualified and committed to providing the same high level of personalized care you've come to expect from our Care Management team. We are confident she will be a wonderful resource and advocate for our patients.

🚨 Scam Alert – Please Be Aware 🚨

We have been made aware of a potential phone scam targeting Medicare patients.

A person recently contacted our office after receiving a call that appeared to come from Northern Pines Health Center's phone number. The caller claimed the patient's Medicare number was "expiring" and needed to be updated. They also falsely stated they needed to change the patient's medical information in order to "renew" their Medicare number.

This is NOT Northern Pines Health Center.

Please remember:
✅ Medicare numbers very rarely expire.
✅ We will never ask you to provide personal or financial information over the phone unexpectedly.
✅ We will never ask you to provide false medical information or change your medical history.

Unfortunately, scammers can make it appear as though they are calling from a trusted phone number (this is known as "caller ID spoofing").

If you receive a suspicious call:
• Do not provide any personal, financial, or Medicare information.
• Hang up immediately.
• If you are unsure whether a call is legitimate, contact Northern Pines Health Center directly at (231) 269-4185.
