Summer loosens the routines that keep health management on track: travel, schedule changes, and a general shift in structure.

For patients with diabetes, that can mean delayed eye appointments. The problem is that diabetic retinopathy has no noticeable symptoms in its early stages. The first sign something is wrong is often caught by a doctor during a dilated exam, not by the patient.

Early diabetic retinopathy is highly treatable. Advanced stages carry real risk of vision loss that cannot be fully reversed.

If you or a family member with diabetes is overdue, both our offices have availability now.

Buffalo Grove and Barrington, we are curious.

It is UV Safety Month and Dry Eye Awareness Month, so sunglasses are on our minds. Simple question:

When you step outside in July, are sunglasses part of the routine?

A) Every time, without thinking about it

B) Only when it is really bright or I am near water

C) Honestly, I forget more often than not

Drop your answer in the comments. We are genuinely curious where this community lands.

Patients often leave an exam knowing their eye pressure number without fully understanding what it means. Here is something that often goes unsaid: that number alone does not diagnose glaucoma.

Roughly 30 to 40 percent of people with glaucoma have pressure in the normal range. And many with elevated pressure never develop glaucoma at all.

Your doctor is looking at the full picture: pressure, optic nerve health, corneal thickness, and peripheral vision patterns together.

Caught early, glaucoma is manageable. Regular exams are the best way to stay ahead of it.

A common misconception: polarized sunglasses protect eyes from UV radiation. They do not.

Polarization cuts glare, which is great for driving or time near the water. But a lens can be fully polarized without blocking any UV radiation at all.

For long-term eye health, look for UV400 or 100% UV protection on the label. And a darker tint without UV rating can actually be worse, because it causes the pupil to dilate, letting more UV reach the back of the eye.

The ideal pair does both. Stop into our Buffalo Grove or Barrington optical to find the right fit for your summer.

Age-related macular degeneration is the leading cause of permanent vision loss in adults over 60 in the U.S. It targets the center of your vision: the part you use to read, recognize faces, and drive.

Early and intermediate AMD often has no symptoms at all. By the time straight lines look wavy or reading becomes difficult, meaningful changes may already be underway.

If you are over 55 or have a family history of AMD, a dilated exam is the most reliable way to catch it early.

Schedule at our Buffalo Grove or Barrington office.

Every summer, patients come in with red, painful eyes after swimming in contact lenses. It is one of the most preventable problems we see.

The risk goes beyond chlorine irritation. Lakes and pools, including Lake Michigan, harbor microorganisms that behave differently when a contact lens is involved. One of the most serious is Acanthamoeba, a Midwest freshwater parasite that can cause a painful corneal infection, difficult to treat and in serious cases capable of permanent vision damage.

The FDA and the AAO both advise removing lenses before any water activity.

If your eyes are red, light-sensitive, or painful after swimming, do not wait. Call us for a same-day appointment.

Sometimes the best way to describe what we do is to let a patient do it.

Amanda recently accompanied her mom to an appointment and shared this:

"Dr. Kiernan was amazing! He is extremely informative, easy to talk to, and patient. He took his time answering all of my mom's questions and helped ease every concern she had."

If you or someone in your family is due for an eye exam this summer, we would love to be the practice you trust with it.

July is Dry Eye Awareness Month, and one thing is worth saying plainly: dry eye is a medical condition, not just a minor inconvenience.

Nearly 20 million Americans have dry eye symptoms. Most manage it for years with over-the-counter drops before learning there is a more effective path. Drops address symptoms. They rarely address the cause.

If your eyes feel persistently gritty, watery, or tired this summer, especially moving in and out of air-conditioned spaces all day, that pattern is worth a conversation.

At Premier Eye Care, dry eye treatment is personalized. Schedule at our Buffalo Grove or Barrington office.

Most families are diligent about sunscreen before heading to the pool or Farmers Market. That habit matters. But there is a gap that often goes unnoticed.

Sunscreen protects skin. It does nothing for eyes.

The American Academy of Ophthalmology found that 74% of parents make their children wear sunscreen, but only 32% make sure kids have UV-protected sunglasses. Children's lenses are clearer than adults', which means UV light reaches the back of the eye more easily at younger ages.

July is UV Safety Awareness Month. Look for lenses labeled UV400 or 100% UV protection and add them to the routine.

Call to schedule your family's eye exams.
