Most orthodontic issues don’t start when all the adult teeth are in - they begin much earlier, while the jaws are still developing.

An early orthodontic evaluation isn’t always about starting treatment right away. In many cases, it’s about monitoring growth, identifying patterns, and stepping in at the right time if needed.

What we look for at an early age:
• How the jaws are growing and aligning
• Whether there’s enough space for incoming adult teeth
• Early signs of bite imbalances or harmful habits

Addressing these factors at the right stage can make future treatment simpler, more efficient, and more predictable. It may also reduce the need for tooth removal or jaw surgery later on.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends the first checkup by age 7.

Orthodontic treatment during the growing years allows us to guide more than just tooth alignment.

At this stage, we can influence how the jaws develop, how the bite functions, and how stable the results will be over time.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends the first evaluation around age 7. This doesn’t always mean treatment starts then - but it allows us to identify potential issues, guide development when needed, and in some cases reduce the risk of more complex treatment later on.

Visit us for a complimentary consultation whether your child is around age 7 or older.

Billie Eilish’s stunning smile is the result of orthodontic treatment, specifically Invisalign.

She’s been seen wearing aligners while already in the spotlight (around ages 17-19), gradually improving her smile and refining subtle spacing and alignment. She was also very open about it, often taking them out during interviews and on camera.

Invisalign works through a series of clear aligners that gently move teeth into a better position over time. They’re removable, discreet, and fit easily into a busy lifestyle. For best results, they’re worn about 22 hours a day and only taken out to eat and brush.

If you’ve been thinking about it but aren’t sure if it’s the right option for you, come in for a complimentary consultation and we’ll guide you through it.

Our dear 14 years old patient completed her orthodontic treatment in 18 months with braces.

She started at age 11 with a severe overbite. The lower teeth were hitting the gums behind the upper teeth, causing irritation and damage over time.

This isn’t just a cosmetic issue. It affects how the teeth function and where the pressure goes when you bite.

Over time, this can lead to:
• Gum trauma and recession
• Excess wear on certain teeth
• Increased strain on the supporting structures

Treatment focused on correcting the overbite and align the teeth correctly, relieving pressure on the gums.

In many cases, a narrow palate is related to early habits and growth patterns:

• Thumb sucking or prolonged pacifier use
• Mouth breathing
• Tongue not resting properly against the palate
• Genetics

❗If not treated, this can lead to severe crowding and misalignment, chronic mouth breathing, speech difficulties, frequent ear infections, and restricted nasal airways. It may also contribute to TMJ disorders, facial discomfort, and chronic headaches❗

Palatal expanders are typically used before puberty, most often between ages 7 and 12, when the jaw can still be guided and the bone is soft and pliable. Treatment usually takes about 3 to 6 months, after which braces may still be needed to align the teeth.

Timing matters. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends an evaluation around age 7.

This patient started treatment at 14 years old and completed it after 19 months in braces.

At the beginning, you can notice spacing between the upper front teeth and an increased overjet - when the upper teeth sit too far forward compared to the lower teeth.

This can affect both appearance and function, and may also make the front teeth more vulnerable to chipping or injury.

With braces, we focused on:
• Closing spaces
• Aligning both arches
• Reducing the overjet and improving the bite

Now, the teeth fit together properly, the smile looks more balanced, and the result is designed for long-term stability.

If you’re not sure what type of bite your child has, we’re here to help. Book your complimentary consultation with our team.

We have patients from 7.5 to 75 years old. And we always say that orthodontics is for every age.

But timing still plays a big role in how simple or complex the journey will be.

In growing patients, we can guide jaw development, create space, and correct bite issues while everything is still forming. In many cases, this can significantly reduce the need for extractions or jaw surgery later on.

In adults, we can still achieve beautiful, healthy results. But over time, untreated bite issues may lead to:

• More tooth wear
• Gum and bone changes
• Increased crowding or shifting
• Greater strain on the jaw joints

So it’s not about “too early” or “too late.” It’s about not waiting until a small issue becomes a bigger one.

Coming in earlier often means more options, less complexity, and a smoother treatment overall.

Our patient started treatment at 12 years old and completed it in 24 months using braces, a Forsus appliance, and tongue tamers.

At the start, you can see an open bite – when upper and lower teeth don’t touch when the jaws are closed, leaving a gap. Many open bites develop due to early habits like prolonged thumb sucking or tongue thrusting.

🟢 Tongue tamers (small fixed attachments behind the teeth) helped retrain tongue position. They acted as a reminder, reducing tongue thrusting and supporting stable, long-term results.

🟢 The Forsus appliance (a fixed device attached to braces) gently guided the lower jaw forward. It works continuously, helping correct bite imbalance without relying on patient compliance.

Early evaluation can help guide jaw development, address issues like open bite before they become more complex, and in some cases reduce the need for tooth extractions or jaw surgery later on.

Those concerns are real. Adults often delay orthodontic treatment because of visibility, time, and daily routine.

That’s why options like Invisalign exist.

In cases where it’s appropriate, it allows us to move teeth using clear, removable aligners that fit more easily into a busy lifestyle. You wear them about 20-22 hours a day, take them out only when you eat or brush your teeth, and change them every 10-14 days to gradually move your teeth.

But it’s not something you choose on your own. Not every case can be treated this way, which is why a proper evaluation matters.

Once you understand what’s happening with your bite and alignment, the decision becomes much more straightforward.

Your bite is how your upper and lower teeth come together when you close your mouth.

A proper bite means your teeth align evenly, your jaws fit comfortably, and there’s no extra stress on your muscles, joints, or teeth.

When the bite is off, your smile may show subtle signs like:
• Jaw tension or clicking
• Tooth wear
• Difficulty chewing
• Gaps, crowding, or shifting teeth
• Headaches or facial muscle strain

These issues don’t always resolve on their own, but they can be treated.

Braces or Invisalign can help guide your teeth and bite into a correct, stable position.

📆 Book your complimentary consultation with Dr. Liz. She will evaluate your bite and determine if treatment is needed.
