Today on World Elder Abuse Awareness Day, we’re raising awareness about the importance of challenging ageism and promoting respect for older people.

This year’s theme, Beyond Awareness: Making Elder Abuse Prevention Work, highlights the importance of creating safer communities and services where older people feel respected and supported to make decisions about their own lives.🫶

Ageism is one of the factors that can enable elder abuse. When older people are treated as less capable, less valuable, or excluded from decisions that affect them, it can create environments where abuse becomes easier to overlook.

Recent reforms in aged care have placed a stronger focus on protecting and strengthening the rights of older people.

Challenging ageism is an important part of this work, which is why we’ve developed a new learning module for providers and workers about understanding and addressing ageism in aged care. It is available now for all registered users.👇
