Buffalo Ophthalmology is proud to share that Dr. Deepan Selvadurai performed the first implantation in Western New York—and was among the first surgeons nationally—to use the newly released blue-light-filtering version of Alcon’s Clareon® TruPlus intraocular lens.

Used during cataract surgery, TruPlus is an enhanced monofocal lens designed to provide clear distance vision while offering slightly more range of focus for everyday activities at arm’s length, such as viewing a computer screen or car dashboard. Patients should still expect to need reading glasses for close work.

The new blue-light-filtering option further expands the choices available to cataract patients, allowing treatment to be more closely matched to each person’s eyes, lifestyle and visual priorities.

I’m pleased to help bring early access to ZOLYMBUS™ to patients here in Western New York.

ZOLYMBUS is a newly FDA-approved, preservative-free glaucoma medication available through Théa Pharma’s ZOLYMBUS First Sight Program before broad commercial availability.

Glaucoma care is highly individualized, and new options are always welcome — especially preservative-free options that may be useful for patients who need long-term eye pressure control or who have sensitivity to preservatives.

I’m glad that Buffalo Ophthalmology is among the early practices in the country participating in this program and able to offer this option to selected patients.

Dr Selvadurai has become one of the first surgeons in the country to reach 100 cases of the Alloflo Suprachoroidal Glaucoma Device that officially launched in October 2025. We have also been participating in a national multicenter trial (CREST) for the device, enrolling patients who had surgery a few months after FDA device approval in 2024. Additionaly, all patients have been on maximum medications and have had a 360-360 OMNI goniotomy/viscocanaloplasty.

This week, Dr. Deepan Selvadurai performed cataract surgery on a patient with a dense, mature white cataract.

White Cataract Facts:
1. Patients with this condition often have vision reduced to hand-motion only.
2. These cases are considered high-risk due to limited visibility, increased intralenticular pressure, and a greater likelihood of capsular complications.

Despite the complexity, the procedure was completed successfully and without complication.

Post-operative Day 1:
The patient experienced a remarkable improvement in vision, achieving near legal driving acuity within 24 hours. This outcome reflects both the transformative potential of modern cataract surgery and the precision required in managing advanced cases.

Today was an exciting day at Buffalo Ophthalmology. Dr. Deepan Selvadurai became one of the first surgeons in New York State – and among the first in the United States – to implant the recently FDA approved Rayner RayOne EMV Toric intraocular lens.

This advanced lens is designed to provide both excellent distance vision and enhanced functional range, while also correcting astigmatism. For many patients, this means clearer, more natural vision with reduced dependence on glasses.

Dr. Selvadurai and the team are proud to continue bringing the latest innovations in cataract and refractive surgery to Western New York — ensuring that patients here have access to the same leading-edge technology available at major academic centers worldwide.

Having a lovely time at this year’s American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting. Today we got to be one of the first in the country to try out to OMNI edge. The version of the product that we tried is still in development but our feedback and study is helping contribute to the next generation of glaucoma surgical devices. Kudos to the folks at Sight Sciences for continuing to innovate in the glaucoma surgical space and for my awesome surgical team in the OR for supporting these developments.
