For 36 years - the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) has supported the fact that people with disabilities deserve the same opportunities as people without disabilities. Sadly, the U.S. Department of Justice is questioning the rights to community living that the ADA and the Olmstead civil rights court decision give people with disabilities.

Here in New York - we will continue to prioritize a community for all. We refuse to go back to the days of institutionalization.

What an amazing day celebrating Disability Pride!

It was so much fun tabling at the event and seeing old friends while meeting so many new ones. There’s something really special about everyone coming together to celebrate community, and inclusion. Thank you to everyone who stopped by and made the day so memorable!

A huge congratulations to our intern, Lily, on completing her internship through the High Road Fellowship! It has been a pleasure having you with us, and we wish you nothing but happiness and success in everything that comes next. We’re so proud of you!

Today marks 16 years since New York State removed the “R” word from our agency name, and we officially became the Office for People With Developmental Disabilities. We celebrate this anniversary every year because we are proud of the past advocates who shaped our agency's history and the present-day advocates who work with us every day to honor the promise of Olmstead, which holds that people with disabilities have the right to live, work, and participate fully in their communities. opwdd.ny.gov/about-us
