It's time to talk pest prevention!

Depending on your location, pest season may be year round for here. Here in New York, May and June bring out the bug baddies, and unfortunately for us, we're in a Lyme endemic area. That makes ticks enemy number one for us, although I try not to think of anything in nature as an enemy. As Greg Tilford, herbalist and founder of explains, ticks do serve a purpose- they exist to make other bugs look good!

His secret for repelling ticks safely (aka without toxic chemicals) includes the use of Laleshwa oil, something I hadn't heard of before this episode. Listen to the entire thing on Raw Remedies podcast (l!nk in bio) to learn this and more!

Injured bird alert- this video is not for someone who has a hard time looking at injured animals. She’s fine, but it’s still a shock.

This cutie and one more chick was supposed to go live with my friend, but I raised her two with my three younger chicks and 6older chickens and ducks. They’ve all been together and doing well here at my house. Well, my friend took her two birdies home today and unfortunately within the hour we had an injured chicken. So, they’re back at my house permanently, and we’re doing some damage control!

Of course, EASE from was number one. I dropped it right onto her injuries as soon as she got back and she didn’t mind. Then we reached for Arnica and calendula from which are helpful for pain, swelling and healing.

We’ll keep a close eye on her for the next few days, but I guess this was the universe saying that she was meant to stay with me 🥹

This girl needs a badass name- drop some thoughts in the comments!

Apparently we mistook the half finished deck as a jungle gym this morning. My husband won’t be happy when he wakes up and finds the joists covered in chicken 💩 😂🫣

Ahhh, statins. The bane of my existance as a healthcare provider! Here's the stepwise issue with these medications and heart disease:

1. The true, underlying cause of heart disease is inflammation.
2. The root cause of that inflammation is high sugar leading to high insulin and persistent microscopic injury to the inner lining of blood vessels.
3. Injured blood vessels develop a 'rough' surface that allows platelets and cholesterol (which does belong in the blood stream since it's a transporter) to stick and build up, forming a plaque
4. Thus, you can develop plaques and blockages with completely normal cholesterol levels, because the issue was never the cholesterol, and therefore cholesterol lowering medications are of little benefit...

Not to mention, you need cholesterol for many functions. Your cell membranes are made up of a certain type of cholesterol. Your brain is mostly fat and water. You can't transport or detox certain substances without cholesterol. So driving it down to an extremely low level comes with risks. Plus, and this is my absolute favorite part, statins cause the development of insulin resistance and diabetes over time! So the medications we prescribe to lower cholesterol (which doesn't prevent heart disease) can actually cause you to develop the actual reason for heart disease in the first place. Sound backward to you?

This is why, in my opinion, we're seeing heart disease and strokes in our pets more and more, when it wasn't common decades ago. We feed a high carb high sugar diet (kibble), then expect there won't be a price to pay for the inflammation that diet causes. What we eat is what determines our health status. Our pets are no different.

Dr. Olivieri is such an amazing resource, so please be sure to tune in to the full episode on Raw Remedies podcast. If you need the l!nk, it's in my bio :)

Thank you for the inspiration- everyone comment your top 5 terrors or make your own post!! The truth to those lovely titles I put above:

1. You can’t have prescription cereal and you can’t have prescription kibble, they’re both the same awful product
2. Lyme and Lepto 💉 are extremely inflammatory and imo should be completely avoided let alone given yearly. The Lyme was a failed human 💉 that got repurposed for animals. See my June podcast released on the first for a discussion with about natural Lyme protection
3. Apoquel suppresses the immune system, so of course the symptoms improved. For now… until the end result is cancer and worse allergies because you didn’t fix the real underlying problem
4. Garlic is safe in non pregnant adult dogs with amount by body weight. will tell you all about it in her page, so go learn!
5. Just because it’s green doesn’t mean it cleans! Greenies don’t clean teeth, just like the Shamrock Shake from McD’s doesn’t clean teeth. They’re both 98% sugar, the only difference is that one is liquid and one is solid, but I still wouldn’t feed either one to my worst enemy.

Tell me yours below!!

Dementia, for both people and pets, can be devastating. You slowly watch your loved ones disappear before your eyes and there's nothing you can do about it... or is there?

We know now that sugar plays a huge role in the development of cognitive decline, and one of the best ways to prevent the development of dementia is to eat a diet low in sugar. That means minimizing foods high in sugar such as pasta, bread, white potatoes, corn, rice.... sound familiar? That's what you'll find in the Standard American Diet (the SAD diet) as well as mainstream kibble and processed pet 'treats' such as m!lkbones. These ingredients do us a disservice from all angles, including the mental ones.

And if you do see signs of mental decline, there are natural approaches that have been shown to be effective! MCT and coconut oil have been used for enhancing cognition, as well as Lion's Mane mushroom. My absolute favorites are CLARITY by and any of the MCT and coconut oils from

The coop is coming along! My feather babies are keeping me busy, but it’s the good kind of busy, where you whistle while you work (except I can’t whistle so I just hum off-key 😅).

Something I’ve learned very quickly and decidedly over the past two months is that ducks make a huge mess. And I’m excited to share more about why I ended up choosing to raise ducks with my chickens, but for now let’s just say that water quickly becomes a problem in an enclosed environment 🫣

I ended up choosing 5 gallon watering system with 6 auto-fill cups since those work best for the ducks. They need to dip their bills into the water in order to keep their nasal passages clean- otherwise they could get sick. Apparently no one ever told them if they eat less messy they wouldn’t have to constantly wash their faces 🤣🤣

I elevated it on a cinder block for now, and it’ll get staked into the ground in the future when we remove the grass from the run and lay down sand. They all drank from the cups right away and weren’t scared at all! I’m a proud poultry mama for sure 🥰

Spending two hours cleaning blood from my fridge including the shelves, crispers, the liners and sliding parts of the crispers, the freezer, under the fridge, the wheels of the fridge, and the floor wasn’t on my docket for today. Which is exactly why I don’t feel bad about having popcorn and a gluten free banana nut muffin for dinner at 9pm.

PSA- crispers aren’t water (or blood) proof. Don’t thaw your raw food in there 🫠

Neurodegenerative diseases do not have to be a terrifying unknown possible future that we have no protections against or warnings for. The turth is that you'll have signs long before the traditional neurologic 'symptoms' ever arrive, and if you listen to your body and give it the support it needs, you actually can prevent some of these dreaded diagnoses that can really take away quality of life.

Multiple Sclerosis, or MS, is one such disease that used to terrify me when I first learned about it in nursing school a million years ago. I'm the right demographic- female, 20-30s, unknown family history due to adoption. I always had a fear lurking in the back of my mind that I could be an MS statistic one day. Then I learned that by nourishing the gut and your mitochondria (aka your metabolic pathways), the risk of developing diseases like MS can be dramatically reduced or in some cases even eliminated.

Please check out Dr. Terry Wahls and her books and lectures about how she was able to reverse her severe MS, which had caused her to be wheelchair bound within a year of 'diagnosis', by supporting her nutrition and gut health. And go to the L!nk in my bio to listen to the full episode and learn even more gems!

My spring sabbatical is over, and I’m BACK with more extra cute feather babies to add to my existing furbaby collection!

April was a whirlwind of finishing the inside projects, and starting on the necessary outside projects (aka the coop), as well as acclimating the chicks and ducklings while teaching them to be friendly and not fear the dogs (who have thus far done a B+ job of respecting their space and more timid nature).

Make sure you listen to the final part of my 3 part metabolic health podcast series, it dropped this month. I’m excited to keep building and growing, both virtually and in our home. Stay tuned 🥰
