This month is the one year mark of Aniya's (my daughter) Bell's Palsy diagnosis and the start of rigorous HBOT, red light, and chiropractic therapies.

The leading cause of Bell's Palsy is something we are all familiar with: it's the times in life you are more stressed than normal. In her case, we were preparing for senior graduation. Then, it turned into one of her scariest moments.

Initially, she was diagnosed with an ear infection. Knowing her body, though, she could tell something wasn't quite right. Then, the day before she was meant to walk across the stage and celebrate with family and friends, she received the diagnosis.

She was given a healing timeframe of six to nine months, so she started a strict routine for recovery:
• HBOT daily for 2 hours
• Red light treatment daily
• Chiropractic adjustments 3x a week
• Eliminating dairy and inflammatory foods

All of this for about 8 weeks.

It was not easy.

But within one week her eye and brows were showing signs of movement, and her left eye would close half way.

By week two, her eye would close while she was asleep, the left side of her mouth moved slightly, the left side of her face had more expression, and her face gained a little more feeling.

By week three, her left eye could close without holding it (there was still a delay), the left side of her face had more movement and she could smile, and her ear pain went away.

By week four and five, it was hard to distinguish the delays in facial movements and expressions, and there was no more pain at all.

One week before she moved to college, you would have never known the nightmare she just went through.

We are so grateful we had a community that gave sound advice and for the knowledge we had about the different therapies.

Brain health is very important. For Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month, we want to encourage healthy habits for your brain. The Alzheimer's Association has 10 Health Habits that can help you. And remember, "It's never too early or too late to start."

1. Challenge your mind with a new skill.

2. Stay in school (or pursue the highest level of training possible). Education helps the brain.

3. Get moving and exercise regularly.

4. Protect your head and do what you can to prevent falls, especially for older adults.

5. Be smoke-free. It can lower the risk of cognitive decline.

6. Control your blood pressure.

7. Manage diabetes.

8. Eat right.

9. Maintain a health weight.

10. Sleep well. Good quality sleep is important for good brain health.

Dementia Awareness Month is deeply personal to us. 🤍

Our mom (and grandma), Helen Jackson, was diagnosed with dementia, and we started noticing the common signs—memory lapses, confusion, and moments where she just didn’t seem like herself. It was incredibly hard to watch someone so full of life begin to fade.

But we didn’t stop there.

Through a combination of hyperbaric oxygen therapy, red light therapy, BrainTap, shifting to a Mediterranean diet, and staying active with the people she loved most, we began to see something we didn’t expect—hope.

Her brain scans showed improvement. Even more meaningful, her symptoms slowed down.

And the best part? We got her back in the moments that mattered most.

She lit up at her great grandchildren’s games and meets. She loved being surrounded by family and friends—laughing, cheering, and fully present in ways we were afraid we might lose.

She has since passed in October of 2024, but she was ready. She went peacefully, surrounded by love.

I share this because this journey showed me that while dementia is powerful, there are ways to support the brain, nurture connection, and protect quality of life for as long as possible.

If you’re walking this path with someone you love, you’re not alone. 💙
