The children who worry the most are often the ones who say the least.

As a therapist, I’ve learned that healing often begins when a child finally finds the words for what they’ve been carrying.

That’s why I wrote Some Things Are Hard To Say.

What is something you wish someone had asked you when you were a child?

06/16/2026

Sometimes healing looks like the very thing we’re afraid to do.

It looks like setting the boundary.
It looks like having the conversation.
It looks like asking for help.
It looks like walking away.
It looks like forgiving yourself.
It looks like trying again.

The truth is, healing often feels uncomfortable because it’s asking us to do something different than what we’ve always done.

We’ve become familiar with survival.
We’ve become comfortable with patterns that no longer serve us.
We’ve learned how to function in dysfunction.

Healing interrupts that.

It challenges what feels normal.
It stretches us beyond what feels safe.
It invites us into growth that we didn’t know we needed.

So if healing feels uncomfortable right now, it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re doing it wrong.

It may mean you’re finally doing something different.

And different can be the doorway to freedom.

Because if it’s on your heart and on your mind, it matters. ❤️

Don’t ask me to do nothing.

Not a meeting.
Not a training.
Not a quick favor.
Not a “while I have you…”

I am in full summer treatment preparation mode.

I’m trying to wrap up the school year, update treatment plans, complete documentation, communicate with families, prepare for summer services, and make sure my clients are set up for success.

So if you see me staring into space…

Just know I’m mentally organizing 47 different things at one time.

Excited to share that I have officially completed 2 out of 3 certification cases in the AF-CBT model and am continuing the process toward full certification. I’m incredibly thankful to continue expanding the evidence-based treatment approaches offered through Matters Of The Heart & Mind Counseling & Consulting.

Alternatives for Families: A Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (AF-CBT) Session Guide is an evidence-based treatment model designed to support children, adolescents, caregivers, and families navigating concerns related to:

• Trauma exposure
• Family conflict
• Physical aggression or harsh parenting
• Emotional and behavioral dysregulation
• Anger and communication difficulties
• Parent-child relationship concerns
• Family stress and unsafe interaction patterns

AF-CBT focuses on helping families build safer communication, emotional regulation, healthy boundaries, problem-solving skills, and stronger family relationships while reducing conflict and improving overall functioning.

As a clinician, it is always an honor to continue learning, growing, and bringing clinically supported interventions back into the work we do with children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families.

We are currently licensed to provide services in North Carolina and Texas, with additional states pending as we continue expanding access to care and support.

If you or someone you know may meet criteria for treatment and are looking for support, healing, and evidence-based care, we would be honored to walk alongside you.

What’s a must-have in your therapist office?
For me?

A whiteboard.

Especially when you’re working with children.
There is something about being able to draw it out, map it out, erase it, and start over that helps kids understand what they’re feeling.

I’ve used my whiteboard for feelings thermometers, coping skills, cognitive triangles, trauma education, grounding techniques, safety planning, problem-solving, family sessions, and even silly games to build rapport.

Some kids don’t want to talk.
Some kids need to see it.
Some kids need to draw it.
Some kids need to teach it back.

A whiteboard gives me the flexibility to meet them where they are.

Now if anyone knows where I can get a giant interactive whiteboard without spending a fortune… send me the link because that’s next on my therapist wish list. 😂

💚 June is Men’s Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Men carry a lot.

They carry responsibilities.
They carry expectations.
They carry grief.
They carry stress.
They carry trauma.
They carry disappointments.
They carry the pressure to keep going, even when they are struggling.

Too often, men are taught to suffer in silence.

At Matters of the Heart & Mind Counseling & Consulting, we want men to know that there is strength in speaking up, asking for help, and prioritizing their mental and emotional well-being.

We are committed to providing a space of psychological safety where men can explore the things they carry in their hearts and minds without judgment.

Our approach integrates faith-based principles with evidence-based treatment interventions to support healing, growth, resilience, and emotional wellness.

Whether you’re navigating anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship concerns, stress, life transitions, or simply feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to walk through it alone.

📍 Licensed in North Carolina
📍 Licensed in Texas
📍 South Carolina Licensure Pending

This month, let’s remind the men in our lives:

You matter.
Your mental health matters.
Your feelings matter.
Your healing matters.

Because if it’s on your heart and it’s on your mind, it matters. ❤️
