❤️Today we remember Dolly Parton, not only for the incredible music she gave the world, but for all the good she did along the way. ❤️

Dolly never forgot her rural roots. She spent her life giving back to rural communities and using her success to help others. Her Imagination Library has provided hundreds of millions of free books to children around the world, and her $1 million donation to Vanderbilt University Medical Center helped support research that contributed to the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine. She also gave generously to children’s healthcare, education, disaster relief, and communities in need.

As a rural community health organization, that legacy is beyond meaningful. Dolly showed how powerful it can be to remember where you came from and use what you have to make life a little better for others.

The world lost a true icon, but the impact she made will continue for generations. Her unwavering advocacy and genuine passion for helping others will never be forgotten. ❤️

💜 Break Stigma. Build Hope. Community Event

International Overdose Awareness Day is August 31, and this Saturday Coastal Horizons Center is bringing our community together in Burgaw to remember those we’ve lost, raise awareness, reduce stigma, and connect people and families with resources that can help.

Black River Health Services will be there, and we’d love to see you! Come by our table, say hello, and connect with the many incredible organizations and resources available right here in our community.

With an Extreme Heat Warning in effect from 11 AM–8 PM, please take care of yourself and take a minute to check on someone else.

Check in on older family members and neighbors, anyone who lives alone, and those who may not have reliable air conditioning. Make sure they’re staying cool, drinking plenty of water, and doing okay in the heat.

🧡 Meet the BRHS Team: Erika Woodfox, FNP-C 🧡

Today we are featuring Erika Woodfox, FNP-C, Family Nurse Practitioner, serving patients at Black River Health Services' Burgaw location.

A North Carolina native, Erika grew up in Charlotte before moving to Wilmington to complete her undergraduate studies at UNCW, where she fell in love with the area. With more than 10 years of diverse clinical experience, including a special focus in pediatrics and trauma-focused care, Erika brings a strong passion for caring for others and helping patients achieve better health.

Erika was drawn to rural healthcare by a desire to serve people and communities where she felt she could make the greatest difference. A self-described caregiver at heart, she believes caring for patients goes beyond treating an illness or condition. She strives to educate and empower her patients, helping them understand their health, take an active role in their care, and work together to develop a plan that supports their long-term health and well-being.

Outside of work, Erika loves spending time with her husband and their two young children, who are the loves of her life and keep her busy! She also enjoys spending time at the beach and on the water, traveling, reading, cooking, and exploring the local food scene.

We’re proud to have Erika’s experience, compassion, and dedication to rural healthcare as part of the Black River Health Services team. 🧡

🎒 Back-to-school time is almost here! 🧡

Between school supplies, new schedules, and everything else that comes with getting ready for a new school year, don’t forget to check your child’s immunization record! North Carolina has specific vaccine requirements for students entering kindergarten, 7th grade, and 12th grade.

🧡 Pender County showed up!

We are so amazed by the turnout for our National Health Center Week event last week! Families began arriving before the event even started, and the turnout quickly exceeded anything we had anticipated! By the end of the day, we had given out more than 200 backpacks filled with school supplies and connected so many families with local resources and organizations.

We could not have done any of it without the incredible support we received from our community! Local businesses hosted donation boxes, donated supplies, and helped spread the word; our community partners spent the day connecting families with resources; our food trucks kept everyone fed; and our BRHS staff jumped in wherever they were needed. Thank you all!! 🧡

We were also honored to receive a Certificate of Recognition from Rep. David Rouzer's office during the event.

We had an incredible day, and we are already looking forward to finding more ways to connect with our community!

Tomorrow is the day! 🧡

The finishing touches are complete, and we can't wait to welcome everyone to our National Health Center Week Community Event tomorrow!

Today was spent organizing an incredible amount of donated items that will be available for local families, and we are so grateful for the generosity and support we've received! Seeing our community come together to help local families has been truly inspiring.

A heartfelt thank you to the many local businesses and organizations that hosted donation boxes and helped spread the word: Brown Dog Coffee Company, Patty’s Place, Burgaw Brewing, Lanier Hardware, Piggly Wiggly, Cape Fear Museum, AmeriHealth Caritas, Atkinson Drug, Dollar General, Junior's Deli, Pender Adult Services, and the Burgaw Area Chamber of Commerce. Your generosity is helping make tomorrow's event even more special for local families. 🧡
