Denise Jean "Dee" Smith Melnyk, 74, a resident of Conway, S.C. since November 2020, passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2026, in the Conway Medical Center.

She was born August 9, 1952 in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Norman Bernard and Elsie Mae Taucher Smith.

A graduate of the Union High School in Burgettstown, her first job was with G.C. Murphy in Washington. From 1984-2018, she worked for Mobay, Miles, Bayer, and retired from Covestro, where she was a production planner.

Dee loved traveling on the trips organized by the Burgettstown Senior Citizens Association and going on vacation with her sister, Missy to Myrtle Beach, S.C. She especially loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins. She also loved her two dogs, Tess and Tiffany; both were adopted into a loving home by one of her caregivers in South Carolina.

She is survived by her sister, Michelle "Missy" Lynn Smith Santek and husband Martin of Eldersville; her nephews, Martin Samuel Santek and wife Abbie of Las Vegas, Nev., Michael Jay Santek and wife Amanda of Glenshaw. She is also survived by her sister- in-law, Dorathy Melnyk Noga (husband Augie, deceased); her nephews, Pete Melnyk and wife Aqua, Brian Melnyk and wife Rae Lynn, Steve Noga and wife Kate; nieces, Debbie and husband Brian, Jody, Sherry and Nickie; great- nieces and nephews, Lily Mae, Asher Michael and Parker Canfield Santek.

Deceased, in addition to her parents, are her husband, Richard, who passed away November 29, 2004; stepdaughter, Kathy Mountain; her brothers-in-law, Tom Melnyk, and Ken Melnyk (wife Terri Melnyk survives); and niece, Anita Paris.

Family and friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, August 20, in Slater Funeral & Cremation Services of Burgettstown, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021, where services, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Toni Harrington, will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, August 21. She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Burgettstown.

Immediately concluding the services on Friday, Dee's family would like to invite everyone to the Slovan V.F.W. for a luncheon and continuation of fellowship.

Dee's family would like to express its heartfelt love and appreciation to her caretakers, Tabitha and Felicia, who took care of her every need with love and friendship for the past two years. May God bless them both.

Mrs. Mildred Carr Carter, 98, a lifelong resident of Burgettstown, passed away peacefully on Thursday evening August 6, 2026 in her home.

She was born on September 13, 1927 in Racoon, a daughter of the late James R. "Buster" Lewis and Blanche Brady Lewis. A graduate of Burgettstown's Union High School, she worked for Gimbel's Department Store in Pittsburgh and as the custodian for the Burgettstown Elementary School from where she retired.

Mrs. Carter was an avid reader and traveler.

Left to cherish her memory are her children Joseph Reginald Carr, III and wife Carole of Alexandria, VA, Patricia Louise Thompson, wife of the late David of Lees Summit, MO, Jacqueline Timmerson, wife of the late Wade, Lori Burke and Melanie Carter Perkins and husband Mark and their families; grandchildren Joseph Reginald Carr,IV and wife Nicole, James Arthur Carr and wife Kelly, Tracie Donnelly and husband Alex, Jordan B. Carr and wife Marion, Kimberly M. Stewart and husband Craig, David E. Thompson, Jr., Darrell I. Thompson and Rebekah L. Gallon; and her very close nieces and nephews Sandra Atkins with whom she shared her home, Ronald E. Atkins, David Atkins and Keith Atkins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband Joseph I. Carr on November 11, 1981; her second husband Emmett Carter on (Date); her daughter Linda Marie Carr Gallon on January 11, 2018; a grandson Aaron N. Gallon; a sister Dorothy L. Atkins and husband Eunice; and her brother James R. Lewis, Jr. and wife Hazel.

Mrs. Carter will be laid to rest beside her husband Joseph with graveside services officiated by the Rev. Antoine Lee on Wednesday August 12, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. in the Grandview Cemetery in Florence, PA.

Lila L. Porchiran, 96, of Slovan, passed away peacefully on Saturday afternoon August 8, 2026 in her daughter’s home in Avella.

She was born on March 24, 1930 in Imperial a daughter of the late Christian and Ida Mae Ackman Junker.

A graduate of the West Allegheny High School, she also attended and completed beauty school in New Brighten. Mrs. Porchiran operated her own beauty salon in her Slovan home for over 35 years. After retiring from hairdressing, she worked with her very good friend Helen Bertolotti at Bert’s Hot Dog Shop in Atlasburg for over 20 years. She enjoyed playing BINGO and trying her luck at the slot machines.

She met her husband George A. Porchiran at a Polka Dance after finding out they were born on the exact same day. They were married in 1951 for 38 years until his passing on August 11, 1989.

She is survived by her four children Terry A. Bauduin, wife of the late Earl of Avella, Dale G. Porchiran and wife Carol of Atlasburg, Kenny Porchiran and wife Robin of Slovan and Carol Jean Mills and husband Larry of Reston, VA; grandchildren Kimberlee Nikolai, Jaime (Brian) Todd, Christopher (Beth) Porchiran, Tanya ( Rob) Embleton, Taylor Mills and Pat Nikolai; great grandchildren Cody, Logan, Addison, Aiden, Reese, Conner and Kendall; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her six sisters Margaret, Mildred, Ella Mae, Grace, Marie and Esther; and three brothers Christian, Wayne and Bud.

Family and friends will be received from 4:00 -8:00 p.m. on Wednesday August 12, 2026 in Slater Funeral & Cremation Services of Burgettstown, 73 Highland Avenue, Burgettstown, PA 15021 where a Blessing Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday August 13, 2026.

She will then be laid to rest with her husband George in Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery, Burgettstown.

Our beautiful mother, Carol Lynn Barish passed away unexpectedly at UPMC Montefiore on Saturday, July 25, 2026 at the age of 71.

Born on January 14, 1955, she was the daughter of the late Albert Fodor and Wanda Hodge Fodor.

She was a proud and loving mother, a fun and doting grandmother, and a loyal friend. We will remember her as the steady heart of our family, whose love and devotion shaped who we are today.

Surviving are her three daughters; Danielle Siko, wife of the late John Siko of Carmichaels, PA; Brandy Cessna and husband, Bill of Clarksburg, WV; Cheri Barish of Joffre, PA; grandson Matt Cessna and wife Hannah of Fairmont, WV; great-grandsons Benji and Max Cessna; her sister, Irene “Beanie” Cox; nieces Hazel Cox and Billie Jo Wolota.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, Gary Fodor.

A memorial gathering will be held on Wednesday, July 29, 2026 from 2 to 8 PM at Slater Funeral Home located at 73 Highland Avenue in Burgettstown, PA 15021.

Family and friends are invited to the memorial service on Thursday, July 30, 2026 at 11 AM at Slater Funeral Home with burial to follow at the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery in Paris, PA.

Kathy Jo Burns, 69 , of Weirton, WV; formerly of Burgettstown and Avella, PA passed away on Wednesday morning July 15, 2026 in the WVU Weirton Medical Center.

She was born on January 17, 1957 in Steubenville, Ohio a daughter of the late Russell and Eva Lee Davis Ford.

Kathy enjoyed gardening and cooking with her husband. She was a 1975 graduate of Burgettstown High School.

She is survived by her two sisters Diana Myers and Ruth Brown; step children Jodi Lynn Burns, James Burns, Jr. and Jessica Burns; and was especially close with her grandchildren Jina and Janson.

Deceased in addition to her parents are her husband James D. "Diz" Burns, Sr. who passed away on December 21, 2015, and a brother David Ford.

She will be laid to rest with her husband at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, 1158 Morgan Road, Bridgeville, PA 15237 on Monday July 27, 2026 at 2:00 p.m. Those planning on attending are asked to meet at the National Cemetery at 1:45 p.m.
