CMV Public Health and Policy Conference Come hear the latest updates on cytomegalovirus (CMV) research; public health initiatives for CMV aw

Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the most common congenital infection found in developed countries. Pregnant women who contract CMV can pass the virus onto their unborn baby, which can result in multiple disabilities including: hearing loss, vision loss, poor brain growth, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, and, in rare cases, fetal death. Recognizing the lack of awareness about CMV and its potential devastating e

ffects on babies, Utah lawmakers led the nation by passing a bill that directs the Utah Department of Health (UDOH) to establish a public education program to raise awareness about CMV and ways to prevent its spread. As part of the education effort, UDOH, public health advocates, and healthcare providers came together to share ideas of how to get the CMV message out to women who are pregnant or may become pregnant. The Cytomegalovirus Public Health & Policy Conference is part of this effort. The goal of the conference is to provide education, delineate prevention efforts, offer information about early intervention options, help other states in replicating Utah's policy efforts, and disseminate family support resources in an effort to reduce the number of babies born with CMV and connect families affected by CMV with the resources they need to improve their quality of life.

๐Ÿง Monday Myth

Myth or Fact: If a child passes their newborn hearing screening, they never need another hearing test?

โžก๏ธ Fact: Hearing can change over time. Some children develop hearing loss after birth, which is why ongoing monitoring, developmental surveillance, and hearing evaluations when concerns arise are so important.

Early identification helps children get the support they need to learn, communicate, and thrive.

๐ŸŽ’ Back-to-school means hearing screenings are just around the corner!

School hearing screenings play an important role in identifying children who may have hearing concernsโ€”but the screening is only the first step.

If your child receives a hearing screening at school:
๐Ÿ‘‚ Ask for the results.
๐Ÿ“‹ Review them carefully.
โœ… If follow-up is recommended, make it a priority.

Even mild hearing loss can affect learning, communication, and classroom success. Early follow-up helps ensure children receive the support they need to thrive.

Before we start talking about conference sessions, speakers, and abstract submissions... let's start with one simple question.

What is EHDI?

Everything we do at the National EHDI Conference comes back to one shared mission: ensuring that infants and children with hearing loss are identified early and receive comprehensive, timely intervention and support services.

๐Ÿ“ As we look ahead to the 2027 National EHDI Conference in Bellevue, Washington, we'll be sharing more about the people, programs, and partnerships that make EHDI possible.

๐ŸŽค Breakout and Poster Abstract submissions are open through September 28! If you have research, innovative ideas, successful programs, or practical experiences to share, we'd love to hear from you.
