Think your child’s car seat is installed correctly? 🚗
After more than 4,000 car seat checks, one UVM Health expert says many families make the same mistakes.

We’re sharing simple, life-saving tips to help keep kids safe on the road:

✅ Tighten it up: Your car seat shouldn’t move more than 1 inch at the belt path.
✅ Skip the puffy coat: Bulky layers make harnesses less effective. Use thin layers instead.
✅ Don’t double up: Use either the seat belt or lower anchors – not both at the same time. And always use the tether for a forward-facing car seat.
✅ Don’t rush transitions: Use a seat that’s right for your child’s age and size. Beware of counterfeit seats that don’t meet safety standards.

Even experienced caregivers can benefit from a refresher. When it comes to safety, every detail matters.

The news cycle doesn’t take a break. And neither does its impact on kids.

Dr. Steven Schlozman, chief of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for UVM Health, shares ways parents can help children navigate the nonstop news cycle and social media environment:

> Start with tone. Avoid dismissing their feelings: Kids can sense it instantly.

> Watch for changes. Sleep disruption, withdrawal or isolation can be signs of kids feeling overwhelmed.

> Keep life predictable. For younger children, routines build security and reduce anxiety.

> Get involved. Encourage positive action (like volunteering) for older kids.

> Be honest but reassuring. Let them know you’re doing everything you can to keep them safe.

> Model healthy coping. Talk things through with other adults and take care of yourself.

👏 What a finale … and what a community! 👏

The 98.9 WOKO Big Change Roundup for Kids 2026 wrapped up today – and we beat our goal by raising $319,693.16 for Golisano Children’s Hospital at UVM Health!

Thanks to the incredible generosity of our communities, we made “big change” happen by supporting high-quality, child-friendly, family centered care for kids and families across our region.

While support came from so many businesses, organizations and individuals, once again the biggest contributor was Maplefields (and customers who rounded up at the pump and inside their stores) – bringing in more than $195,000.

We were also proud to honor Dr. Lewis First as he closes an extraordinary chapter after 30+ years of pediatric leadership, while welcoming Dr. Judy Schaechter, who will become the hospital’s chief of pediatrics and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Larner College of Medicine at the University of Vermont and UVM Health on July 1.

“This is our children’s hospital, and this is for all of us and about all of us,” said Dr. First. “Even though my time co-hosting Big Change Roundup is ending, I’m going to continue to be a part of making sure this community has what it needs for our children. I thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

THUMP! The sound every parent dreads. When 9-year-old Eliza fell at home, she seemed OK at first. But soon her parents rushed her to UVM Medical Center, where doctors diagnosed a life-threatening epidural hematoma.

“There are only a handful of true ‘neurosurgical emergencies’ and an acute epidural hematoma is one of them,” says Elizabeth Wicks, MD, the on-call neurosurgery resident who arrived at Eliza’s bedside minutes after her scan.

Thanks to quick decisions, expert pediatric neurosurgical care and a lot of compassion, including a promised-pre-surgery braid – Eliza is back at school, skiing and looking forward to a summer at riding camp.

“We really felt like we were cared for by an entire community,” says her mom, Hillary.

What does culturally responsive maternity care really look like?

At UVM Health, it starts by listening.

Refugee and immigrant women in Burlington clearly told us what they needed: support from people who spoke their language, understood their culture and could help them navigate the hospital system.

So clinicians and community partners took action, launching a grant-funded culturally informed doula program. Community members are trained and paid to support patients through pregnancy, labor and postpartum care while helping bridge gaps in communication, trust and understanding.

“I received some of the best care, and I wish I had this support with my other children,” said one participant, who recently gave birth to her 12th child.

This is what it looks like to build care around what patients actually ask for. Read more in the comments.
