September 14 | National Sober Day 🤍

Today is for the days, the hours, and sometimes the minutes people have chosen not to pick up.

It’s for the person celebrating 20 years and the person quietly trying to make it through Day 1.

It’s for the person who got sober after losing almost everything — and the person who decided they didn’t need to lose everything first.

It’s for the people who are sober, sober curious, cutting back, starting over, or still trying to figure out what their relationship with alcohol or substances looks like.

Recovery doesn’t have to look a certain way to count.

There is no prerequisite for asking for help.
You don’t have to hit rock bottom.
You don’t have to have the perfect recovery story.
And you definitely don’t have to have it all figured out.

As someone with lived experience in recovery and as a therapist who now gets to walk alongside others finding their own way, this day means more to me than I can put into words.

Every day you choose yourself matters.

Whether today is Day 1, Day 1,000, or another day you stopped counting — I hope you’re proud of how far you’ve come.

And if you’re still trying? You belong here, too. 🤍

September is National Su***de Prevention Month.

As a therapist, su***de prevention is an important part of the work I do. As someone who has personally experienced the loss of a loved one to su***de, this month also carries a meaning that extends far beyond my professional role.

Su***de impacts individuals, families, friends, and entire communities. For those left behind, grief can be complicated by unanswered questions, guilt, anger, confusion, and the profound absence of someone who should still be here.

This month is an opportunity to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and remind ourselves of the importance of meaningful connection.

We can check in with the people in our lives. We can ask direct questions when we are concerned. We can listen without judgment. We can take changes in behavior seriously. And we can continue creating spaces where people feel safe saying, “I’m struggling” without fear or shame.

Seeking support is not something that needs to wait until a crisis. Su***de prevention begins long before someone reaches their most difficult moment.

This September, I honor those we have lost, those who continue to carry the grief of su***de loss, and those who have survived moments when staying felt impossible.

May we continue to have the conversations that are difficult, necessary, and potentially life-saving.

If you or someone you know is experiencing a suicidal or mental health crisis, call or text 988 to reach the Su***de & Crisis Lifeline. In an immediate emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

The world is so much better with you in it 💜

- today is International Overdose Awareness Day. To honor such a devastating thing, people tie purple ribbons to their trees; I imagine the world covered in them. Because this is a disease that touches far more people than you realize…it is a nationally declared epidemic. In 2025, 69,973 people died from overdoses. That’s 191 people a day. And every single one of those deaths is grieved by family members who did or did not see it coming. It is a death that robs us long before the last breath. So today, remember those who struggle with addiction, those seeking to love an addict through addiction, and the ones already lost. Narcan saves lives and can be accessed at your local behavioral health agency. If you are in need of resources and are in CT you can call 211.
