Last Day for Discounted Tuition in Swampscott - Houses of Worship Safety and Security Training Program

This 5-day intensive and interactive course prepares police officers and representatives of the community to serve as liaison officers to faith-based communities. The program is geared towards public safety officials but is also very useful for Fire, EMS, Emergency Management, Public Health, private security guards, school officials, and faith leaders.

The emphasis is on prevention, protection, mitigation, response, and recovery - with the liaison officer's most important work happening before an emergency occurs. This program is designed to build the relationships, skills, and community preparedness that prevent calls for service from happening in the first place.

The program includes a brief overview of major faith traditions to support effective engagement, as well as coverage of relevant property crimes and statutes, laws of self-defense, and personal bias.

Students will learn how to:
✔ Conduct security and crime prevention assessments for faith facilities
✔ Recognize hate crimes, terrorism indicators and bias (including personal bias)
✔ Teach suspicious activity recognition and reporting
✔ Teach response to bomb threats, suspicious packages and SWATing incidents
✔ Teach verbal contact and de-escalation skills to security personnel and safety volunteers
✔ Deliver active threat / active shooter response presentations
✔ Work with multi-disciplinary threat assessment and threat management teams
✔ Facilitate tabletop exercises for emergency scenarios in faith-based environments

Cities and towns need to have plans for pets in disasters. Many people will refuse evacuation orders, and very few will take advantage of warming or cooling shelters if you don't have arrangements for their pets.

When an emergency happens, pets rely on their owners to take care of them. National Animal Disaster Preparedness Day, held annually on May 8, is a reminder that it's important to have emergency plans in place.

Pet emergency kits should include:
• Food, water, and medications
• Familiar items to make pets feel comfortable
• Sanitation items
• Travel supplies
• Important documents such as identification papers, medical records, emergency contacts, and a photo of your pet.

This is the kind of proactive outreach that we are trying to encourage with our Houses of Worship Liaison Officer Training Program. The next class is coming up in Swampscott in June, and we are giving $750 scholarships to leaders and security volunteers in the faith community so that they can attend with their police, fire, public health, and local government professionals.

Our program includes 5 days of training on suspicious activity reporting, behavioral threat assessment, de-escalation, active shooter response, handling major incidents, and how to facilitate tabletop exercises. Everything needed to start a comprehensive safety and security program.
