What’s in my therapy bag?

It's not a fancy bag, but you might be surprised by how many everyday items can become therapy tools!

My therapy bag might include:
📅 A calendar for practicing organization, planning, memory, and scheduling
💊 Medication bottles for functional memory and medication-management tasks
📝 Paper & pens for writing, note-taking, problem-solving, and communication
🃏 🍴 Mealtime items when we’re working on swallowing or functional eating
📱 Technology for communication, cognitive strategies, AAC, and teletherapy
📚 Everyday reading materials because real-world reading is often much more meaningful than a worksheet

Because when therapy happens in the home, we can work on the things that actually matter in your everyday life.

A brain injury can change much more than you might expect. After a stroke or traumatic brain injury, changes aren’t always visible.

Here are 3 areas that may be affected:

Communication - Finding the right words, understanding conversations, following directions, reading, writing, or speaking clearly may become more difficult.

Cognition - Attention, memory, organization, problem-solving, and planning can all be affected.

Everyday Functioning- Even familiar tasks can suddenly feel more difficult—managing medications, keeping track of appointments, preparing meals, or communicating with loved ones

Speech-language therapy can help identify specific challenges and develop strategies to improve communication, cognition, and participation in everyday life. Sometimes it’s about finding new strategies that help you move forward.

What exactly is cognitive-communication?

You might be surprised to learn that your thinking skills and communication skills are closely connected. Cognitive-communication refers to how we use skills like:
🔹 Attention
🔹 Memory
🔹 Organization
🔹 Planning
🔹 Problem-solving
🔹 Reasoning
🔹 Executive functioning

A change in these skills can make everyday activities much harder.

These challenges aren’t always obvious to other people—but they can have a big impact on independence. SLPs can help identify these challenges and develop strategies that make everyday tasks more manageable.

Think speech therapy is just about talking? Think again!

Speech-Language Pathologists do so much more than help people pronounce their words. We can help with:
- Speech: improving clarity, rate, and coordination
- Language & communication: finding words, understanding information, reading, writing, and expressing thoughts
- Cognition: memory, attention, organization, problem-solving, and planning
- Swallowing: helping people eat and drink more safely
- AAC: finding alternative ways to communicate when speech isn’t enough

But perhaps most importantly, speech therapy can help people function more independently in everyday life. At Life Speech Services, therapy focuses on the skills that matter most to you and your everyday life.

I love being a speech-language pathologist because the work we do can have such a real and meaningful impact on someone’s everyday life.

Speech therapy isn’t just about saying a sound correctly or completing an exercise.
Sometimes it’s about helping someone:
- Tell their spouse what they need
- Have a conversation with their children or grandchildren
- Safely enjoy a favorite meal
- Make an important phone call
- Feel more confident managing everyday tasks
- Get back to the activities that make life meaningful

For me, the best part of therapy is connecting the skills we work on in a session to the life someone wants to live outside of therapy. That’s why I believe in functional, person-centered care.

Because at the end of the day, therapy isn’t about checking boxes. It’s about helping people communicate, participate, connect, and live their lives.

One of the most common questions I get is, “What kinds of patients do you see?”
My primary focus is working with adults after stroke and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

I help address challenges in three main areas:
- Cognition: Memory, attention, problem solving, executive functioning and organization of thought
- Communication
- Aphasia, dysarthria, word finding, and understanding language
- Swallowing: Difficulty chewing or swallowing, mealtime safety, and changes in eating and drinking

I also work with adults experiencing difficulties related to other neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, and dementia.

Every person is different and to me, that means therapy should be different, too.

My goal is to figure out what matters most to you and your family and build therapy around those goals.

What is Life Speech Services?

Life Speech Services is an outpatient speech therapy practice providing services directly in the patient’s home environment, because I believe the most meaningful therapy happens right where life actually happens.

I travel to clients within approximately 30 minutes of Lewistown, PA, and I also provide teletherapy services throughout Pennsylvania.

My primary focus is working with adults after stroke and traumatic brain injury, as well as individuals with other neurological conditions.

My goal is simple: provide functional, person-centered therapy that fits into real life.

Hi! I’m back!

I’m Rebecca, the owner and SLP behind Life Speech Services. I started Life Speech Services in 2022 with the goal of providing person-centered speech therapy to adults right in the comfort of their own homes.

I wanted to create a practice that allowed me to meet people where they are—literally and figuratively—and provide therapy that is practical, functional, and meaningful to their everyday lives.

I also wanted to create a practice that gave me the flexibility to be the wife and mom I want to be to my husband, Zach, and our two kids, Avery and Rowan.
This past season was such a reminder of why I started Life Speech Services in the first place. Because of the flexibility of my practice, I was able to take an extended six-month maternity leave and spend those months at home with my family.
I’m incredibly grateful to my patients and referral sources for supporting me during that time and allowing me the opportunity to step away and be fully present with my family.

And now… I’m so excited to be back!

Thanks for being here and following along with Life Speech Services!
