During surgery, we use retractors usually made of metal to help show us the parts of the body we need to work on and move away normal tissue that we want to protect. This is an example of using a plastic protector to protect the wound, and also metal retractors to push the tissue further away and improve the view

I try to go through the arthroscopic pictures from surgery with the family immediately after the operation. I think it’s helpful to show what we do during surgery, explain things we are worried about and give people some hope that they can get back doing the things they love.

These two photos are essentially a picture taken from the same position, which shows a hole in the tendon, and what’s called a double row rotator cuff repair closing that hole up.

Sometimes it's impossible to save as much bone as possible

This is a proximal humeral replacement used in cases of severe bone loss, tumors, and revision surgeries where the patient's own bone just can't be preserved.

Every case is different. Every decision matters.

What if shoulder pain is affecting more than just your shoulder?

When pain starts interfering with your sleep, daily routines, or the activities you enjoy, it can be easy to think that you simply have to live with it. You don’t have to.

Persistent shoulder pain can make simple movements feel difficult—from finding a comfortable sleeping position to reaching, lifting, or getting through your day without discomfort.

Motion matters because your quality of life matters.

👉 If shoulder pain is keeping you up at night or limiting the way you move, it may be time to have it evaluated and understand what could be causing it.

Don’t let shoulder pain become your new normal. Your pain deserves attention, and your movement deserves a chance.

🏛️ DID YOU KNOW? 🏛️

I'm standing at the Asclepion of Kos , the birthplace of Hippocrates and one of the most important healing centers of the ancient world.

This hillside sanctuary wasn't just a temple. It was one of history's first hospitals, where patients came to be treated using medicine, herbal remedies, and even early psychology ,2,400 years before modern healthcare existed.

The inscription on the Hippocrates bust reads: "To help, or at least do no harm" the original root of what we now call "First, do no harm."

Every summer, Kos brings this history to life with the Hippokrateia Festival a ceremony where performers in white robes and laurel crowns descend the ancient steps, symbolically reenacting the Hippocratic Oath that medical students including yours truly still recite today. 🙏⚕️

Standing here as a physician, walking the same ground where medicine as we know it began... humbling doesn't even begin to cover it.

Day One at📍 Kos, Greece — the birthplace of Hippocrates, father of medicine and the mind behind the timeless principle "First, do no harm."

Honored to be speaking at the 31st Congress of the Hellenic Society for Surgery of the Hand & Hellenic Society for Reconstructive Microsurgery fittingly themed "From Hippocrates to Modern Hand Surgery."

Today I'm presenting on Allograft Reconstruction of Distal Triceps/Proximal Ulna Defects as part of the Invited Speakers' Lectures on Complex Elbow Problems. Another lecture to come this Saturday.

Incredible to be in the same room as colleagues from across the world, carrying forward a tradition of healing that started right here over 2,400 years ago.

Honored to be part of a distinguished community of hand and microsurgery specialists, discussing pectoralis major transfer for deltoid insufficiency using a functioning muscle to help restore movement in an arm that otherwise could not move.

A meaningful example of how innovative muscle transfer techniques can restore function and improve quality of life for patients with complex upper-limb conditions.
