☀️➡️📚 Summer may be winding down, but our focus on safety continues.
As routines change and school buses return to the roads, take a moment to look ahead, slow down, and expect the unexpected.

Kids may be excited to see friends, catch the bus, or head home after a long day—let’s make sure they arrive safely.

New school year. Same goal: keep our kids safe.

Think at the sink!

What goes down your kitchen drain can significantly affect your plumbing and septic system.

Be mindful of what you put down the drain, especially grease, oils, and food scraps. Small kitchen habits can help prevent clogs, backups, and costly problems down the road.

This Septic Safe Week, take a second to think before you sink!

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of Lontcs Busy Boards due to a lead hazard. The zipper on the recalled busy boards contains excessive levels of lead and violates the federal lead paint ban.

The busy boards were sold on Amazon from May 2024 through July 2026 for about $31. No injuries have been reported.

If you have a recalled busy board:

• Stop using it immediately.
• Contact SQT for instructions on receiving a full refund.
• Do not allow children to continue playing with the product.

Lead exposure can be harmful to children, particularly young children. If you are concerned about possible lead exposure, contact your child's healthcare provider.

For product details and recall informationvisit the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission at cpsc.gov and search Lontcs Busy Boards.

Mosquitoes are more than just a summer nuisance.

A mosquito bite can spread diseases like West Nile virus (WNV), when the mosquito is infected.

Right now, Nebraska is seeing very high West Nile virus activity, especially in central and eastern Nebraska. That means there is increased evidence of WNV circulating among mosquitoes in these areas, making mosquito-bite prevention especially important. Nebraska DHHS continues to monitor mosquito populations statewide to track where and when WNV is circulating.

The best way to protect yourself is to prevent mosquito bites:

• Use insect repellent containing an EPA-registered active ingredient such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oil of lemon eucalyptus (OLE), para-menthane-diol (PMD), or 2-undecanone.
• Cover up by wearing long sleeves, long pants, and socks when practical, especially when spending time outdoors.
• Dump standing water around your home where mosquitoes can lay eggs. Check flowerpots, buckets, toys, birdbaths, gutters, tires, and other containers that can collect water.
• Keep screens in good repair to help keep mosquitoes outside.
• Take extra precautions around dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are most active.

Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms. About 1 in 5 people develop mild symptoms such as fever, headache, or body aches, while a small number develop serious illness affecting the nervous system.

Mosquito season isn't over just because summer is winding down. Keep taking steps to prevent bites while mosquitoes are still active.

For current West Nile virus and mosquito surveillance information, visit the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services.

💛September is Su***de Awareness Month, a time to talk openly about mental health, connection, and the support people need during difficult times.

Resilience doesn’t mean never struggling. It’s the ability to adapt, recover, and keep moving forward through challenging experiences. And resilience isn’t something you either have or don’t have. It can be strengthened over time.

Staying connected with others, caring for your physical health, making time for things you enjoy, and asking for help when you need it can all support resilience and well-being. 🌱

This month, take some time to learn about resilience and other ways to support your mental health through CredibleMind.

🌾🚌 The school year brings more activity to our roads—especially in our rural communities.

Farm trucks, commuters, school buses, and young drivers are all sharing the road. Be prepared for buses stopping on highways, students waiting near roads, and children crossing in unexpected places.

Remember: Red lights mean stop. A child’s safety depends on it.

Let’s work together to make sure every student gets to school and home safely.
