When most people think of anxiety, they picture panic attacks or constant worry. But anxiety often shows up in quieter ways that are easy to misread:
Snapping at people over small things
Putting off tasks until the last minute
Overthinking a simple message before sending it
Struggling to fall asleep because your mind won’t slow down
Tight shoulders, a clenched jaw, or an upset stomach
Needing everything planned so nothing can go wrong
Saying yes to everything because disappointing others feels unbearable
Many people go years calling themselves lazy, moody, or “just a perfectionist,” when what they’re actually experiencing is anxiety trying to keep them safe.
Understanding this matters. When you label yourself harshly, anxiety often gets louder. When you recognize what’s happening, you can respond with care.
The next time you notice one of these signs, try pausing and asking yourself:
“What am I worried might happen right now?”
Then try a simple grounding step: breathe in slowly for four counts, and breathe out for six. A longer exhale can help signal to your body that you’re safe.
Noticing anxiety is not the same as being defined by it. With the right support, it can become much more manageable.
If anxiety is affecting your sleep, your work, or your relationships, you don’t have to figure it out alone. Speaking with a counselor can help.
Save this as a reminder, and share it with someone who’s been hard on themselves lately.
