🌿💧 ESSENTIAL OIL SPOTLIGHT: FRANKINCENSE & PAIN
You asked for essential oils for pain relief & inflammation, so let’s actually get into the WHY.
Today we’re talking about Frankincense (Boswellia carterii).
Frankincense essential oil is steam distilled from the resin of the Boswellia tree. One of the things that makes this oil interesting is its natural chemistry.
🧪 WHAT’S INSIDE THE OIL?
What makes it especially interesting is its chemistry. Frankincense essential oil contains a high proportion of monoterpenes, including α-pinene, along with limonene and other aromatic constituents.
These constituents are part of why researchers and aromatherapy professionals continue to explore frankincense for its potential analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity. One of its major constituents is α-pinene at approximately 45%, along with limonene (~14%) and other naturally occurring aromatic compounds.
Why does that matter?
Because essential oils aren’t just pleasant fragrances. Their chemical composition helps aromatherapists understand an oil’s properties, how it may be used, and how it should be incorporated safely.
🦴 NOW LET’S TALK PAIN & INFLAMMATION.
In aromatherapy, frankincense is used as part of supportive care for things such as:
• Joint and muscle discomfort
• Sore or overworked muscles
• Joint stiffness
• Comfort during massage
• Relaxation when pain is accompanied by tension
My training also discusses frankincense in connection with inflammatory conditions and analgesic properties.
But here’s an important distinction:
🌿 Frankincense essential oil is NOT the same thing as a Boswellia herbal supplement.
They come from the same plant source, but the extraction method changes what compounds end up in the final product. So we shouldn’t assume research on an oral Boswellia extract automatically applies to frankincense essential oil.
That’s the part of aromatherapy I find fascinating, the chemistry matters.
And when I combine that knowledge with Manual Therapy, I’m not simply asking, “What oil is good for pain?”
I’m asking:
👉🏾 What type of discomfort are we dealing with?
👉🏾 What’s contributing to it?
👉🏾 Which oil makes sense for that person?
👉🏾 What’s the safest method of application?
👉🏾 And how can aromatherapy complement NOT replace the rest of their care?
💜 NEXT: We’ll talk about how frankincense can be used topically for muscle and joint comfort and why dilution matters.
