As we proceed through Men’s Health Week, we want to take a moment to talk about screening for prostate cancer.
For men, this is an important screening and not one that you should neglect talking to your doctor about – especially as you continue to age.
Although only about 1 in 451 men under age 50 will be diagnosed, the rate shoots up to 1 in 55 for ages 50 to 59, 1 in 20 for ages 60 to 69, and 1 in 12 for men 70 and older. Nearly 60% of all prostate cancers are diagnosed in men over the age of 65, according to the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The good news is that about 90% of all prostate cancers are detected when the cancer is confined to the prostate or the region around it, and the 5-year survival rate in the United States for those diagnosed with early-stage prostate cancer is around 99%.
Screening for prostate cancer should begin at the following ages:
• 50 years old, if you and your doctor have determined you’re at average risk
• 45 years old if you’re at high risk, which includes African American men and those with a first-degree relative diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age
• 40 years old if you’ve had more than one first-degree relative who diagnosed with prostate cancer at an early age
