The DEA is working on new rules for prescribing controlled substances through telemedicine, and one proposal could create serious access problems.

The rule would require clinicians to be physically located in the same state as the patient when prescribing Schedule II medications through telemedicine. That could undercut one of telepsychiatry’s biggest advantages: reaching patients in rural or underserved areas where in-person psychiatric care is limited.
