Sepsis can happen when the body has an extreme response to an infection. It can become life-threatening quickly, so knowing the warning signs matters.

In this video, Dr. Sydney Hester, an infectious disease doctor with our broader HCA Healthcare network, shares what to watch for and when to get emergency care.

At HCA Healthcare, our Sepsis Prediction and Optimization of Therapy (SPOT) system continuously monitors vital signs, lab results, nursing reports and other data to detect often subtle changes in a patient's condition and alert clinicians to signs of sepsis so they can take appropriate action.

If you or someone you love may be experiencing signs of sepsis, don't wait. Call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room: https://bit.ly/4gkhkfe

Congratulations to the class of 2026-27 and our newest Patricia Frist Memorial Scholars!

Established by the HCA Healthcare Foundation, the Patricia Frist Memorial Scholarship supports eligible dependents of full-time and part-time colleagues as they pursue undergraduate education. Beginning in 2026, scholarships are now renewable for up to three additional years or until completion of an undergraduate degree, helping extend the impact for colleagues and their families.

Among this year’s recipients is Colton Deatherage, whose mother, Joy, serves as a Registered Vascular Technologist at West Valley Medical Center. Colton is entering his sophomore year at Rocky Mountain College, where he is pursuing a degree in accountancy.

“Knowing that they believe in me and my abilities to enhance my community with my education gives me so much confidence heading into my sophomore year,” Colton shared. “It gives me motivation to honor the legacy and philanthropy of Patricia Frist and the work ethic instilled in me by my mom and family.”

Colton credits his mom’s example of hard work and dedication as a source of inspiration, recalling the extra shifts and early mornings she took on while also caring for their family. For Colton, the scholarship not only helps ease the financial burden of tuition, but also provides encouragement to continue working hard, giving back and making a difference in his community.

This year, the Patricia Frist Memorial Scholarship supported 29 recipients across HCA Healthcare’s Mountain Division, providing more than $100,000 in funding. Across HCA Healthcare, more than 634 scholarships were awarded to support the educational goals of colleagues’ dependents.

Congratulations, Colton, and all of this year’s Patricia Frist Memorial Scholars. By investing in the educational goals of our colleagues’ families, we’re helping open doors to new opportunities and healthier tomorrows!

Every minute matters during a stroke. Fast care can help protect brain function and lower the risk of long-term disability.

That’s why door-to-needle time — or DTN time — is so important. It’s the time it takes a patient with an ischemic stroke to receive clot-busting medication (“needle”) after arriving at the hospital (“door”).

We're proud to be part of HCA Healthcare, a leader in stroke care. Our teams follow proven best practices to help patients get safe, high-quality treatment when they need it most. Those efforts have helped achieve an average DTN time of 33 minutes across HCA Healthcare hospitals — 45% faster than the national standard.

Lung cancer screening can help find cancer early — often before symptoms begin. If you’re 50 to 80 and meet at least one of the screening criteria shown here, you may be eligible for a low-dose CT scan, a type of X-ray that screens your lungs. If you have Medicare, you must be 50 to 77 to qualify. Swipe for more about screening guidelines.

As part of HCA Healthcare, West Valley Medical Center can connect you to more resources, more solutions and more possibilities for your care. Through the HCA Healthcare Sarah Cannon Cancer Network, you have access to personalized, coordinated cancer care close to home, should you ever need it.
