A commentary published in JAMA is calling for the 2025–2030 Dietary Guidelines for Americans to be withdrawn and rewritten.
The reason: several of the authors behind the guidelines disclosed funding or compensation from the National Cattlemen's Beef Association, the Texas Beef Council, the National Dairy Council, and the National Pork Board, among others.
Dr. Neal Barnard, who led the call, pointed out that the guidelines also skipped any consumer testing before being finalized and presented to the public as neutral science.
These aren't obscure guidelines. They shape school lunches, hospital menus, and nutrition advice given to millions of Americans every single year.
When the people writing the rules are being paid by the industries those rules are supposed to regulate, "science-based" starts to look like a stretch.
