Dental Health: Maintaining a pet's dental health is crucial, just as it is for humans. Unaddressed dental issues can lead to severe health complications. Similar to human teeth, canine and feline teeth accumulate plaque, which hardens into tartar if left untreated, causing gum deterioration. This condition can progress, potentially spreading infection to other parts of the body and resulting in serious illness. Consulting a veterinarian for professional dental care guidance can significantly contribute to ensuring the longevity and overall health of a beloved pet.

February is Dental Health Month!

Have you been getting kisses from your pet and noticed that they have stinky breath? Don’t go nose blind to that odor, it could be a sign of periodontal disease or another serious health issue. Dental health is very important and goes hand in hand with your pet’s overall wellness. We recommend having your pet’s teeth and gums examined yearly. Our doctors will perform this during your pet’s wellness visit to check for early signs of any health issues that may occur. Studies have shown that a healthy mouth can actually add years to your pet’s life.

Periodontal disease is the most common problem affecting pets in all age groups.

The very best way to help prevent periodontal disease is daily dental care at home, as well as professional dental care. You can start at home by brushing your pet’s teeth. To get started you can get your pet used to having your finger in their mouth, once they tolerate your finger you can slowly introduce your pet to a wet soft toothbrush. After your pet is comfortable with the toothbrush you can add a special veterinary toothpaste. Human toothpaste should never be used on your pet as it can be harmful to them.

We recommend a thorough dental cleaning when needed to help keep your pet’s teeth and gums healthy. By brushing your pet’s teeth at home, you may be able to help prevent issues that could result in more extensive dental work. Once tartar accumulates on the teeth and touches the gum line your pet should be scheduled for a cleaning. Your pet will receive dental x-rays, a thorough mouth/dental examination, scaling and polishing of the teeth, and have any needed extractions while under anesthesia. At pickup you will be given detailed at home care instructions as well as our doctor’s recommendations for continued dental care.

We will be offering 10% off all dental procedures for the month of February. Call us to inquire about your pet's dental cleaning today! 706.629.5060
