Eighteen years ago, NICU nurses showed Christi’s family a kindness she never forgot. Today, she’s the NICU nurse doing the same for other families.

Christi’s baby girl passed away in the NICU around Christmastime. During the family’s darkest days, the nurses caring for them created little Christmas hats and mementos they could take home.

Those small acts of compassion stayed with Christi.

“I just wanted to be able to help other families the way our nurses helped us through the worst time of our lives,” Christi said.

The experience ultimately inspired Christi to leave sales, go to nursing school and become a NICU nurse. She’s now been caring for babies and their families for 15 years.

And every Halloween, that care takes a particularly special form. 🎃

Christi makes sure each baby has a special costume, giving families a chance to celebrate a first they may not have imagined happening in a hospital. The costumes go home with the families as keepsakes from their baby’s first Halloween.

Christi even works every Halloween so she can be there for the tradition.

“NICU is probably the scariest thing those parents will ever go through, and we’re all just trying to help them navigate through it and add a little joy along the way,” Christi said.

For Christi, a Halloween costume is more than a costume. It’s a way to pass along a kindness her own family never forgot.

50 years. Thousands of patients. Countless lives touched.

When Linda became a nurse in 1975, she never imagined she would still be doing what she loves five decades later.

For 50 years, Linda has cared for patients, comforted families and helped shape the next generation of nurses. While healthcare has changed dramatically over the years, her passion for nursing has remained the same.

That passion for caring for others is just one of the reasons Linda is Atrium Health Floyd's newest DAISY Award winner.

"I believe in helping people," Linda said. "A lot of people need compassion, especially when they're sick. Be a voice for someone who can't be a voice for themselves."

As many nurses from her generation retired, Linda felt called to continue working so she could share her knowledge and help young nurses grow into compassionate caregivers. She believes nursing is about more than clinical skill. It's about treating every patient like family and showing up each day ready to make a difference.

"You really have to love what you're doing to do this job every day," she said. "And I really, really love it. I've been very happy in what I've chosen to do in life."

Her impact reaches far beyond the patients she has cared for. It lives on through the nurses she has mentored, encouraged and inspired throughout her career. Perhaps no one summed up Linda's legacy better than Holly Marks, Clinical Manager of Neurosciences at Atrium Health Floyd:

"For more than half a century, Linda has cared for patients, guided new nurses and inspired everyone around her. Her legacy is written not only in the lives she has touched, but also in the generations of nurses she has taught, encouraged and empowered to carry her example forward."

Thank you, Linda, for 50 years of extraordinary care, service and compassion.

A lump. An unclear scan. A feeling that something wasn't right.

For Tara, trusting her instincts made all the difference.

At 48, Tara was diagnosed with triple-negative invasive ductal carcinoma, an aggressive breast cancer. After advocating for a biopsy and navigating multiple procedures, she found Harbin Clinic oncologist Dr. Melissa Dillmon and a care team that helped her move forward with confidence and hope.

One of her goals was simple: to see her daughter graduate before starting chemotherapy.
She did.

She started treatment the day after she watched her daughter walk across the stage.

Today, Tara is cancer free and featured in the Faces of Hope gallery at the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center, where her story inspires others.

Today, Tara is thankful for the ability to choose. She chose her oncologist. She chose when she would begin treatment, and she’s still making the important choices that inform her life.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and a reminder to women to prioritize screening and advocacy, for Hartline that meant trusting her instincts, speaking up and choosing a cancer journey that was right for her.

Tara found acceptance and encouragement from the team at the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center. You can learn more about the cancer care available through Atrium Health Floyd and Harbin Clinic. https://bit.ly/3XOTMXi

When Maribel drove past the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center years ago, she believed a cancer diagnosis meant there was no hope.

Today, she sees something very different.

Her journey began during a routine mammogram visit when she mentioned a concern she had noticed. Additional testing and a biopsy soon confirmed breast cancer. As a mother of three, she immediately feared the worst.

Everything changed after meeting her care team.

“I just wanted to know if I even had a chance,” she said.

Treatment included chemotherapy, surgery, radiation, immunotherapy and hormone-blocking medications. Through it all, her faith, family and support system helped carry her forward.

Today, Maribel's story and portrait are featured in the Faces of Hope gallery at the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center, where survivors inspire others facing cancer.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Maribel encourages women to keep up with screenings, pay attention to their bodies and remember that cancer is not always the end of the story.

Can you really die from a broken heart?

Most people understand that a heart attack or heart disease diagnosis can affect their physical health. What many don't realize is that it can also have a major impact on their emotional well-being.

Fear of another cardiac event. Anxiety about the future. Stress over treatment and recovery. Grief for the life they expected to live.

According to the American Heart Association, roughly 1 in 3 heart attack survivors experiences symptoms of depression, and many others struggle with anxiety, stress or other forms of psychological distress during recovery.

In this video, Dr. Maxwell Prempeh, cardiologist with Atrium Health Floyd and Harbin Clinic, explains the powerful connection between heart health and mental health, including why emotional stress can affect the heart and how conditions such as "broken heart syndrome" (Takotsubo cardiomyopathy) can mimic the symptoms of a heart attack.

When Carol noticed breast pain, she considered waiting until her next mammogram appointment.

"I thought I had strained a muscle," she said. But something kept telling her she needed to get it checked sooner. Family members and friends encouraged her not to wait.

The decision to schedule that appointment changed everything.

Carol learned she had Stage 3 HER2-positive breast cancer and began an aggressive treatment plan that included chemotherapy, surgery and radiation. Throughout treatment, support from her family, coworkers and community helped carry her through difficult days.

Today, Carol says cancer changed her perspective.

“Cancer has changed me. It makes you appreciate your family more. It makes you appreciate life.”

Carol is one of the survivors featured in the Faces of Hope gallery at the Harbin Clinic Cancer Center, where portraits and stories inspire patients and families facing cancer.

During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, her message is simple: pay attention to your body and don't ignore changes that concern you.
