NURSE SHORTAGE! 🧑‍⚕️👨‍⚕️

The Philippines could face a shortage of nearly 250,000 nurses by 2030 if stronger investments are not made to retain nurses in the country’s health sector, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In its State of the World’s Nursing 2020 assessment, WHO projected that the Philippines could experience a nursing shortfall of 249,843 by 2030. The figure is a projection released in 2020—not a newly issued 2026 estimate—and assumes insufficient action to strengthen and retain the nursing workforce.

The challenge reflects a wider global workforce problem. The same WHO assessment projected a 4.6-million global nursing shortfall by 2030 without sufficient action, highlighting the need for countries to strengthen nursing education, employment, leadership, and workforce retention.

More recent Philippine workforce figures show that staffing pressures remain significant. In 2023, the Department of Labor and Employment cited a shortage of around 127,000 nurses in the country. In May 2024, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa said the Philippines needed about 190,000 additional healthcare workers overall to address gaps in the healthcare system, accounting for migration, overseas employment, and new graduates entering the workforce.

The figures underscore a central challenge for the country: while Filipino nurses remain highly valued around the world, strengthening opportunities and working conditions at home will be crucial to ensuring that Philippine hospitals and communities have enough healthcare professionals in the years ahead.

As OFW Nurses it's true na mas malaki ang sahod namin compare sa Pinas pero sana tanongin niyo din kami kung gaano kalaki ang cost of living expenses namin before kayo mag assume na parang namumulot lang kami ng pera dito sa abroad.

If the govt raises the minimum salary of entry level nurses to 50k a month. Do you think it will help us to retain here.
