I am excited to have had the opportunity to contribute to the publication titled "Forms of Loss and the Process of Grieving in the Black Community." This publication explores grief and loss within the Black population. It examines current societal challenges, mental health services, family dynamics, and systemic oppressions that affect the grieving process for Black individuals.
My chapter is titled "Grief as a Black Spouse: Grieving a Spouse Due to an Unforeseen Fatality or Critical Illness." This chapter explores the grief journey of Black spouses coping with sudden loss through cultural, emotional, and spiritual lenses. It highlights how communal rituals and shared mourning foster connection while societal expectations to “stay strong” often suppress vulnerability. Grief is framed as both a personal and collective experience shaped by faith, history, and systemic inequities. The narrative emphasizes the need for culturally responsive support that honors authenticity and resilience. Healing is portrayed as an ongoing process of identity reconstruction, self-care, and remembrance. Through spirituality, ancestral practices, and emotional expression, Black spouses transform grief into a testament of enduring love and survival.
