📢“Be careful!!!” is ingrained in so many of us… myself included!

While this phrase isn’t necessarily bad, many children need more specific support to:
⭐️build awareness of their environment
⭐️strengthen critical thinking skills
⭐️assess risk and safety in the future

📢Parents, you are an equal and important member of the IEP team!

These meetings are meant to be a collaborative conversation and opportunity to reflect on your child’s progress, strengths, and goals for the next year.

Asking questions is a great way to:
✨Build an understanding of your child’s engagement, participation, successes, and challenges across contexts
✨Reflect upon therapeutic approaches that have been helpful/unhelpful
✨Creatively incorporate your child’s unique strengths, interests, learning style, and vision for their future throughout the IEP
✨Collaborate on helpful strategies and approaches to incorporate across contexts

Try asking these 6 questions at your next IEP meeting:

1️⃣ ”What does ___ look/sound like?” (Fill in the blank for anything you want to better understand!)

2️⃣”What do you view as my child’s strengths?”

3️⃣”How can we work together to help staff & classmates understand my child better?”

4️⃣”What approaches have been helpful/unhelpful this year?”

5️⃣”How can we incorporate what’s meaningful to my child in this IEP?”

6️⃣”How can I support at home?”

To learn more about IEPs and ways to feel confident at IEP meetings, I highly recommend following these accounts:

Do these conversations sound familiar?

Adult: “How was school?”
Child: “Good”

Adult: “What did you learn?”
Child: “Lots of stuff”

There are many reasons why it could be difficult for children to answer these types of questions, including:

➡️ They feel overwhelmed when asked open-ended questions
➡️ They need help organizing their language to respond
➡️ They feel tired and need space to decompress

Here are some tips on language to use instead:

✨ Ask more specific questions (“What game did you play during recess?”)

✨ Look through readings/homework together and talk about them (“Wow! There are so many different forms of government. Which one did you learn about today?“)

✨ Use statements that show you’re listening and care, but don’t require a response from your child (“I was thinking about you during your science test today”)

It’s back to school month for many children… which means it’s time to prepare for a big transition.

This time is tough for many families, as returning to school means that kids need to adjust to new people, schedules, expectations, and communication styles.

Here are 3 ways parents can help their children navigate these changes and emotions:

⭐️Preview the change ahead of time
-Provide information about their school (e.g., teacher/classmate names, pictures of the classroom, daily schedule, etc.)
-Read books and watch TV shows that talk about school

⭐️Use visuals to build predictability
-Create a “Match the picture” to help children create a mental image of what something looks like when it’s done (e.g., ready body for school)
-Use visual schedules for the entire day or a part of a routine

⭐️Make time for connection
-Find extra time to be fully present with your child to help them feel seen and loved during a tougher time

🌈♾️Happy Autism Acceptance Month!

Autism is a neurotype - one of the many unique ways of experiencing the world.

One of the best ways to spread autism acceptance is by learning from autistic people directly. A few of my favorites are linked below!
