The ADA Forsyth Institute

The ADA Forsyth Institute Established in 1910, ADA Forsyth is a world leader in oral health research, education, & outreach. Based in Somerville, MA.

Founded in 1910 as a dental infirmary for disadvantaged children, the Forsyth Institute has a proud history of not just meeting the oral health needs of kids – but exceeding the traditional limits of oral medicine. In the mid-1900s, researchers at Boston-based Forsyth revolutionized the oral health profession when they discovered the connections between dental decay and bacteria. Building on these

revelations, the Institute has become an independent research organization dedicated to advancing human health and well being through scientific discovery and education. Although our hallmark is the study of oral health, our focus has widened over time to include the investigation of such diverse areas as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and regenerative medicine. We have adopted this multidisciplinary research approach in order to analyze and prevent the severe systemic ramifications of oral infections. The world's most trusted authority in our field, we have a reputation for redefining convention – and we've made a century-long commitment to the community. Our work has inspired our profession to re-examine the scientific basis for oral disease. Today, the gifted scholars from around the globe who join our quest are dedicated to achieving a new generation of breakthroughs in oral health and disease prevention. Forsyth, an independent non-profit organization, is affiliated with Harvard School of Dental Medicine and Harvard Medical School and has collaborations with university and research organizations around the world.

🦷🪥 Do you have red or bleeding gums? You may be eligible for a paid research study.

The Center for Clinical & Translational Research (CCTR) is currently seeking volunteers for a 6-week, 3-visit study to test a new (investigational) mouthwash in reducing bacteria that cause gingivitis.

Eligibility: Massachusetts residents aged 18-65 years with Gingivitis (red and bleeding gums).

At a screening visit, providers will:

🦷 Review your medical and dental history

🦷 Examine your teeth, gums, and mouth

🦷 Determine if you are eligible for the study

Please note: Participants must reside in MA and must be able to travel independently to the Center for Clinical and Translational Research, located at the ADA Forsyth Faculty Associates Dental Clinic at 100 Chestnut Street, Somerville, MA 02143 for the screening visit and all subsequent study visits. New research from ADA Forsyth sheds light on one of oral microbiology's biggest mysteries. Lead author Dr. Deepak Chouhan, Associate Professor Dr. Batbileg Bor, and a team of collaborators published a new study in Nature Communications revealing previously unknown details about how ultrasmall Saccharibacteria, from human "microbial dark matter," interact with human gingival epithelial cells.

The team found that Saccharibacteria cluster TLR2 receptors and are internalized via caveolin-mediated endocytosis, effectively dampening the inflammatory response triggered by other bacteria. It's a major mechanistic breakthrough with implications for understanding and potentially treating periodontitis.

How do we verify the levels of active ingredients released from toothpaste in the first minute of brushing?

Professional scientists at ADA Forsyth’s ADA Seal of Acceptance testing program run a controlled one-minute release test to measure fluoride availability under simulated brushing conditions.

Testing begins with precise preparation, accurately weighing toothpaste and working solution into syringes. The sample is then transferred back and forth between syringes for one minute, replicating the mechanical action of brushing.

From there, the sample is processed through a series of analytical steps: centrifugation, filtration, and controlled dilution to prepare for instrumental analysis.

Ion chromatography quantifies fluoride concentration with high precision. This data is cross-checked against alternative analytical methods to ensure consistency and reliability.

The goal is simple but critical: manufacturer-stated fluoride levels must align with levels of fluoride measured in testing.

This work supports the ADA Seal of Acceptance program, trusted by clinicians and consumers to ensure that products meet the highest standards.
