Are we looking at the next generation of South Jersey doctors?

This summer, we piloted a new Mini Med School, giving high school students ages 16+ and college students the opportunity to spend two weeks shadowing physicians, learning about different areas of medicine, and exploring what it takes to build a career in health care.

The experience wrapped up with a hands-on skills station and the chance to connect with current medical students and residents—empowering participants to ask questions, hear about their journeys, and learn from those just a few steps ahead of them.

Programs like this are about more than introducing students to medicine. They’re about creating opportunities to explore, learn, build confidence, and imagine what their own future in health care could look like.

Two groundbreaking advances are redefining what breast cancer surgery looks and feels like.

Virtua is the first in the Philadelphia and South Jersey region to offer endoscopic nipple-sparing mastectomy (E-NSM), a minimally invasive approach that uses a small, discreet incision and offers less visible scarring, less postoperative pain, and a direct-to-implant option without the need for a second procedure.

Virtua is also the first in South Jersey to offer breast neurotization (Resensation®), an innovative technique that gives nerves the opportunity to regrow after mastectomy and potentially restore sensation to the reconstructed breast.

Breast surgical oncologist Dr. Lori Timmerman and microvascular plastic surgeon Dr. Prakash Mathew are bringing these advanced options to patients through the Penn Medicine | Virtua Health Cancer Program.

For patients experiencing a mastectomy, these advances offer more options to consider not only their treatment, but their recovery and quality of life afterward.

Beth goes the extra mile—in and out of the hospital.

As a registrar in the surgical department at Virtua Voorhees Hospital, Beth Cash helps make what can be a stressful day a little easier for patients and their families. She’s often one of the first friendly faces they see, offering guidance, reassurance, and a calming presence when it matters most.

Outside of Virtua, Beth is the founder of She Runs Wild, a women’s hiking and adventure community that brings people together through shared experiences and meaningful connection. Her commitment to giving back goes even further, as she organizes donation drives to support local organizations and neighbors in need.

In this episode of “Here for Good: Inside Edition,” Dennis chats with Beth about her role at Virtua, the inspiration behind She Runs Wild, and how her passion for helping others keeps her moving forward.

Can we take a minute to talk about what compassionate care really looks like?

During a 35-day stay at Virtua Voorhees Hospital, a patient and their family faced incredibly difficult decisions about continuing care and hospice. Through moments filled with uncertainty, emotion, and complex dynamics, two nurses—Taylor Miller and Kailynne Budd—showed up with compassion, patience, and empathy.

Taylor and Kailynne cared for the patient for 10 of those 35 days. They listened. They supported. They helped guide the family through some of the hardest conversations they would ever have.

Their care made such a lasting impact that the patient’s family felt compelled to write a letter to Virtua, sharing their gratitude and recognizing the extraordinary compassion these two nurses showed during one of the most difficult times in their lives.

From all of us at Virtua, thank you, Taylor and Kailynne, for being here for good.

Leadership isn't always about having the loudest voice in the room. Sometimes, it's about seeing an opportunity to make things better and bringing people together to create meaningful change.

Over the past three years, Erica Gilmore, nurse at Virtua Marlton Hospital, has done exactly that. From mentoring new nurses and serving as a charge nurse to leading professional governance initiatives, she is dedicated to helping both her colleagues and patients thrive.

One of her most impactful accomplishments was leading a yearlong project to improve communication between the emergency department and inpatient nursing teams. By collaborating across departments—including nursing leadership, IT, and frontline clinicians—Erica helped implement systemwide improvements, giving inpatient nurses access to clearer, more complete patient information and strengthening the continuity of care.

It’s for these reasons, and many more, that we’re excited to present Erica with the WE Communicate Thoughtfully award!
