Relationship triggers can feel overwhelming, especially when emotions escalate faster than we can slow them down. In our newest blog, we explore why small moments in relationships can feel so intense, what’s actually happening in the nervous system during emotional overwhelm, and one practical DBT skill that can help interrupt the spiral before it takes over.

If you struggle with relationship anxiety, emotional reactivity, conflict escalation, or feeling “too emotional” in close relationships, this one may resonate.

“I know I’m overreacting.” Usually, that thought comes afterward. After the argument. After the panic texting. After crying, shutting down, snapping, or spiraling over something that felt huge in the moment. And afterward, there’s often confusion and shame: “Why did I react like that?” I...

Gratitude dinner for our incredible Awake DBT interns 🤍
So much appreciation for the energy, thoughtfulness, and creativity they bring to our Awake team every single week. It’s been a true pleasure watching their growth unfold and supporting them as they step into their voices as clinicians.

When emotions are intense, it can feel like you need to fix the problem right away.
But sometimes, the most effective thing you can do is pause and take care of yourself.

Our newest blog explores the DBT skill of self-soothing through the 5 senses and why it’s more powerful than it seems.

Many people come into DBT feeling skeptical about certain skills. One of the most common reactions we hear is: “This feels like a waste of time.” When emotions are intense, it can feel more “productive” to overthink, problem-solve, or push through. Slowing down to light a candle, listen to m...

Dialectical Behavior Therapy for adolescents (DBT-A) just received a powerful research update: it is now classified as a Level 1, well-established intervention for reducing su***de attempts and other self-injurious thoughts and behaviors in youth (Esposito et al., 2026). Level 1 means DBT-A has been tested in multiple high-quality studies and consistently shows positive effects, putting it in the strongest evidence category for youth at high risk.

When DBT is delivered the way it was evaluated in the research - comprehensive, adherent, and with strong family involvement – therapists are offering one of the most rigorously supported treatments available for suicidal adolescents. This is why pursuing DBT-Linehan Board of Certification (DBT-LBC™) matters: certification is not just a credential, it is a commitment to model fidelity and quality that can translate into better outcomes and, ultimately, save lives.

I’ve been a huge Lady Gaga fan for years — not just for her music, but for how open she’s been about her mental health. She’s talked candidly about healing from psychosis and PTSD, and that kind of honesty really matters.

In this old Oprah interview, she shares about her experience with DBT and the skill of Radical Acceptance.

As a DBT therapist (and someone who actually practices these skills myself), it’s powerful to hear a public figure describe something I teach every week.

Radical Acceptance isn’t about liking what happened. It’s about acknowledging reality as it is so we stop adding extra suffering on top of pain. When that shift clicks for someone, it can be life changing.

Grateful for voices that help destigmatize therapy. And grateful for skills that truly work.

When new clients call Awake DBT, many of them say the same thing: “I don’t even really know what DBT is… I just know something isn’t working.” Recently, a new client came in telling me she had only heard the letters “DBT” from a friend. She didn’t know what it stood for. She didn’t...
