Recovery doesn't ask for perfection. It asks for practice.

Tending to your mental health every day, in the quiet seasons as much as the hard ones, is what makes it sustainable. Movement, mindfulness, connection, support. One day at a time.

While some people report that kratom has helped them, others have found it to be highly addictive.

In this clip from a recent NBC News segment, Mountainside's kratom expert, Jana Wu, discusses the importance of understanding both sides of the conversation.

As national conversations around kratom continue to evolve, it's critical that we make room for both clinical expertise and lived experience.

In this NBC News segment, Mountainside's Jana Wu, LCSW, LADC, CASAC, ICRC shares what she has observed on the front lines of treatment as more individuals seek professional help for problematic kratom use. As one of the country's leading voices on the subject, Jana brings a nuanced perspective: acknowledging that while some people report benefits from kratom, others have found it highly addictive and difficult to stop.

The segment also features Meg Lemieux, a participant in Mountainside's free weekly Let's Talk Kratom support group. After more than a decade of sobriety from alcohol, Meg shares her personal experience with kratom and the challenges she faced when its use began affecting her life.

At Mountainside, we believe education, open dialogue, and compassionate support are essential. That's why we launched Let's Talk Kratom in 2023—a free, clinician-led virtual support group designed to help individuals explore their relationship with kratom in a nonjudgmental environment.

Thank you to Steven Romo and NBC News for bringing attention to an issue affecting individuals and families across the country.

Stress plays a major role in recovery, and learning how to decompress is one of the most valuable things you can do for yourself. A restorative routine gives your mind and body the space to process, reset, and prepare for what comes next. Research shows that self-care practices are directly connected to stronger, more sustained recovery, because when you take care of yourself, you take care of your recovery. You deserve the same care you give to everything else in your life.

Take care of you. One day at a time.

Kratom withdrawal can be physically and emotionally challenging, especially as more individuals report experiencing dependency, increased tolerance, and difficulty stopping use on their own.

At Mountainside, Jana Wu, Director of Clinical Integration and kratom expert, works closely with individuals navigating kratom dependency and withdrawal, helping provide the clinical support, education, and guidance needed to begin recovery safely.

With limited research surrounding kratom and its potential interactions with over-the-counter products and other substances, understanding the risks associated with use is critical.

Through education, clinical care, and ongoing support, individuals and families can better navigate the realities of kratom use and recovery.

Thank you to Huntington Matters for highlighting the recent “Understanding Kratom: A Community Symposium” held at Mountainside's Huntington location.

The coverage reflects a growing community conversation around kratom, including its increasing presence in local settings, evolving product landscape, and the need for greater public education.
Throughout the evening, Jana Wu, LCSW, Mountainside's Director of Clinical Integration and kratom expert, provided clinical context on what providers are seeing in practice, including rising use patterns and concerns around highly concentrated products such as 7-OH. Her insights underscored the importance of staying informed as this substance continues to shift in form, access, and perception.

We appreciate the continued collaboration with community partners including Huntington Matters, AWARE Drug and Alcohol Community Coalition, and Thomas’ Hope Foundation in helping bring awareness-driven conversations to the forefront.
