Could Lyme disease bacteria have a nutritional weak spot?

UCF infectious disease researcher Dr. Mollie Jewett and her team are studying whether Borrelia burgdorferi—the bacterium that causes Lyme disease—can be “starved” by limiting its ability to use riboflavin, or vitamin B2.

Borrelia can’t make many nutrients on its own, so it scavenges what it needs from the host. If researchers can interrupt that process, it could one day point toward more precise therapies that target the Lyme bacteria with less impact on beneficial bacteria.

Dr. Jewett’s team consists of graduate assistant Arielle Lee, doctoral student Anna Schulz, and undergraduate Grace Easterling, a Florida native who suffered severe joint pain due to Lyme disease.

This is early-stage research—not a treatment and not diet advice—but it’s an encouraging look at how scientists are searching for smarter ways to disrupt Lyme disease at the source.
