We’re so in awe of mighty Elder flower, a sweet protector of the Church of the Holy Basil. Just a little jaunt off Pisgah highway at the base of Mt. Pisgah and the Blue Ridge Parkway alongside Hominy creek, our church (retired United Methodist) is hugged by many plants we enjoy for educational classes, propagation and harvest. Elder (Sambucus spp.) is our showstopper and she seems to be the guardian of all the plants beneath her mighty umbels. We are grateful for her abundant flowers and fruit to share with birds and pollinators throughout spring and summer. We have planted Asclepias tuberosa (Butterfly w**d) underneath Elder and other pollinator-friendly plants throughout the garden. We are a sanctuary and continue to transplant many native woodland plants in the forest behind the church. May we protect our native plants for many generations forward.

🌱🌱🌱 We recently had a plant swap and potluck at Red Moon and had the pleasure of a sweet plant walk with Marc N. Williams and an eye serum making class with Deb Maslowski. Marc brought up the legacy of Frank Cook who coined the phrase, "Eat Something Wild Everyday” and we sure do love to make that our goal, even if it’s just a nibble. Marc carries on the legacy of Frank Cook and others who walked before us, identifying plants and appreciating their beauty, nourishment and generosity. Today we found some young poke leaves in the shade, simmered them twice and drained the water then cooked with a little butter and ramp salt. ❤🥂👵👵🏽👩‍🌾👨‍🌱Some things don't cost a lot, yet they can be more exciting than finding a $20 bill you forgot about in a jacket pocket. I got excited about an old, once-broken hoe I hadn't seen in a while. My grandaddy fixed this hoe by welding a random metal rod to the tool plate when the handle was broken. He left his earthly body over 20 years ago, but I cling to this tool extra hard today because it means a lot, a handy tool he wouldn't have dreamt of throwing away. He'd been through tough times like many folks in his generation. He was born in 1908, a small child during WWI, a young man during the Great Depression, and a husband and father in WWII times. It was three eras where necessity became the mother of all invention. I am so grateful to know all four of my grandparents, and this inherited treasure is worth very little, but it’s a real treasure to me. I mix soil or grab stubborn w**ds with it and remember my grandparents sweating in the sun or canning on a hot summers day. The grip isn't the best, the metal rod is slender and it doesn't sit in your hand like modern tools built for comfort. I don't mind if I get blisters on my hands, I feel alive and smile, seeing their farm in my mind. I shed a few tears when I pulled it out to use for the growing season. Some of you can relate to tough times, using what you have out of necessity and finding ways to improvise in this very moment in your own lives. With warmer weather arriving, we welcome the busy season of plant processing! One of the many plants keeping us busy lately is Arnica, harvested from the Red Moon garden and made into an oil that is ideal for soothing bruises and sore muscles.

There are many steps that go into this process. First, we watch and wait patiently for just the right time, when the bright yellow blossoms open. This doesn't all happen at once, so we usually end up making several small batches in a season. Then, the plants are chopped and we wait a little more while the plant material is wilted enough to slightly reduce water content. Next, our Arnica is put in a jar with organic extra virgin olive oil and placed in a warm location to infuse. The last step is to strain and bottle the oil so it can make its way to you!
