Harold "Glenn" Gudger

Harold "Glenn" Gudger, 88, passed away peacefully, leaving behind a lifetime of cherished memories, unwavering love, and a legacy that will continue through the family he adored. Born on January 19, 1938, in Asheville, North Carolina, Glenn lived a life defined by hard work, laughter, adventure, and devotion to those he loved most.

On November 27, 1957, Glenn married the love of his life, Clara "Ruth" Arrowood. Together they shared 68 beautiful years of marriage, a remarkable journey built on faith, friendship, perseverance, and unconditional love. Through every season of life, they stood side by side, creating a home where family always came first.

Glenn was a devoted husband, a proud father, and a loving grandfather and great-grandfather. He was preceded in death by his beloved son, Curtis Joel Gudger, who passed away on March 9, 2008.

Those left to treasure his memory include his devoted wife, Ruth Gudger; his daughter, Diane Campbell of Candler; eight grandchildren: Cody Campbell (Brandy), Courtney Mazankowski (Aaron), Shannon Bell, Jennifer Jones (Chris), Ryan Gudger (Kristal), Amber Cameron (Brian), Caleb Gudger (Laura), and Heather Vaughn (Alex); as well as eighteen great-grandchildren who brought him endless joy and pride.

Many throughout the Asheville area knew Glenn from his years of employment with Square D and Cutler-Hammer before he courageously pursued his entrepreneurial spirit by starting his own business. Whatever work he did, he earned the respect of others through his honesty, determination, and willingness to lend a helping hand.

While Glenn worked hard, his greatest accomplishments were found at home with his family. He treasured every opportunity to make memories together- whether spending weekends at the lake, camping beneath the stars, skiing, gathering with extended family, or riding motorcycles through the winding mountain roads of North Carolina and Georgia. Every trip became an adventure, and every adventure became another story he would joyfully tell.

In later years, Glenn and Ruth discovered a shared hobby that brought them even closer together. Fascinated by rocks and minerals, Glenn taught himself the art of lapidary, carefully cutting and polishing stones with remarkable patience and skill, while Ruth transformed his creations into beautiful wire-wrapped jewelry. Together they spent many happy years traveling to arts and crafts shows, sharing their talents and meeting countless new friends along the way.

Glenn never met a stranger. His warm smile, quick wit, and gift for conversation made everyone feel welcome. Whether telling stories, sharing a joke, or talking about almost any subject imaginable, he had a way of making people feel like old friends. Among the memories he held most dear was singing in the quartet at Deaverview Baptist Church, where he joyfully used his voice to praise the Lord alongside others who shared his faith.

A graveside service to celebrate and honor the life of Harold "Glenn" Gudger will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, August 10, 2026, at Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Candler, North Carolina. Pastor Mike Hicks will officiate.

As family and friends gather to remember Glenn, they will celebrate a life well lived by a man who loved deeply, laughed often, worked faithfully, and leaves behind a family forever blessed to have been loved by him.

The care of Mr. Gudger has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler.

Roddie Jacobs

Roddie Jacobs, 71, of Candler, passed away on Saturday, July 25, 2026.

Born on November 27, 1954, in Andrews, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Odell and Margaret Day Jacobs.

Roddie lived a life marked by laughter, hard work, generosity, and quiet resilience. As a young man, he was known as the class clown at Enka High School, always ready with a joke to brighten someone's day. While his sense of humor made him memorable to classmates, he was equally dedicated, serving in the school's ROTC program and driving a school bus before graduation.

Following high school, Roddie answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army. He served honorably as a Military Police officer while stationed in Germany, carrying with him the values of duty and service throughout the rest of his life.

After returning home, Roddie built a career as a skilled diesel mechanic and welder, working for Vulcan Materials and later Taylor & Murphy. He took pride in honest work and was respected for the knowledge and craftsmanship he brought to every job.

Outside of work, Roddie found his greatest joy in simple pleasures. He loved casting a line into a mountain stream in search of trout and spent countless hours tending his garden. Tomatoes, blueberries, beans, corn, and many other vegetables flourished under his care. The true reward, however, wasn't the harvest itself, it was sharing it. Whether it was jars of homemade salsa, sweet jellies, or freshly canned vegetables, Roddie delighted in giving away the fruits of his labor to family, friends, neighbors, and just about anyone fortunate enough to cross his path.

As his health began to decline, Roddie faced life's challenges with determination and grace. His sister, Carolyn, lovingly became his primary caregiver, faithfully helping him with daily tasks, transportation, and countless appointments. Her devotion allowed him to remain as independent as possible for as long as he could. When his needs eventually exceeded what could be provided at home, Roddie became a resident of Pisgah Manor. There, he found not only exceptional care but also genuine compassion. His family extends heartfelt gratitude to "The A-Team," along with all of the nurses and his physical and speech therapists, whose kindness, encouragement, and unwavering support brought comfort and dignity to Roddie throughout his journey.

Roddie attended Pole Creek Baptist Church, where his faith remained an important part of his life. Above all else, he treasured his family. He shared a special bond with his beloved niece, Karli, and adored little Addy and Aria, who brought him immeasurable happiness.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Troy Jacobs, and his sister-in-law, Brenda Jacobs.

Left to cherish his memory are his sisters, Carolyn Jacobs of Candler, Alice Holmes (Randy Woodard) of Brevard, and Nancy Osteen of Leicester; his brother, Britt Jacobs of Leicester; and several nieces and nephews, along with many friends whose lives were made brighter by his humor, generosity, and gentle spirit.

A memorial service celebrating Roddie's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 2, 2026, at Pole Creek Baptist Church.

Though his later years were marked by illness, they were also marked by extraordinary love, faithful caregivers, and the unwavering support of family and friends. He will be remembered not for the struggles he endured, but for the laughter he shared, the hands that built and repaired, the gardens he cultivated, and the generous heart that found joy in giving to others.

The care of Mr. Jacobs has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler.

He shared a bond of brotherhood with Gary Bailey and Chris Bailey, and his wisdom and gentle encouragement enriched the lives of his nephews: Dwayne (Karen) and their son Uriah, Scott (Brooke), and Warren Bailey. His friendship with Bosco Lowe stood as a testament to Walter’s loyalty and the effortless warmth he brought into every relationship.

The Bailey family mourns not only the loss of Walter but also remembers those who went before him. His father, Walter Eugene Bailey, Sr., his mother, Lois Elizabeth Waycaster Bailey; his dear sister Jeanne Elizabeth Cox, beloved great-nephew Elam Bailey; and sister-in-law, Elma Joyce Bailey are each held dear in memory, their stories continuing in the legacy Walter now leaves behind.

His relief efforts for the survivors, especially the children, of Hurricane Helene remain a testament to his big heart and commitment to his community.

Mr. Bailey served in the United States Air Force as a radar technician in the Pacific, and his skills continued into his employment as an engineer with Hilton in Hawaii. He loved playing baseball, and his team had gone on to win division championship. His childhood was filled with wonderful memories with his family and friends. Ronnie Lloyd Smathers

With profound sadness and deep gratitude for the life he lived, we remember Ronnie Lloyd Smathers, who passed away peacefully in Buncombe County on July 3, 2026, at the age of 72. Born on August 9, 1953, in Haywood County and growing up in Waynesville and Candler communities, Ronnie spent his years bringing warmth, love, and steadfast devotion to everyone fortunate enough to know him.

From his earliest days, Ronnie’s spirit was shaped by the mountains of western North Carolina and the guiding hands of his loving family. The son of William Lloyd Smathers, Sr., and Margaret Willie Greenarch Berry, Ronnie’s roots ran deep in the hills that he called home. He carried the lessons learned from his parents and his community through every chapter of his life, lessons of kindness, hard work, and faith in those he cherished.

Ronnie loved gardening and growing plants. His gift of "Ten Green Fingers" allowed him to grow flowers and vegetables alike, and he would gift his plants to his family, friends and neighbors at any chance he had.

Ronnie’s heart was never more complete than when it beat alongside those he held most dear. His beloved Linda G. Smith shared a partnership with him defined by unwavering loyalty and affection. Ronnie was the proud father of three daughters, Marty Smathers Daves (David), Misty Smathers-Williams (Terry), and Mindy Leigh Smathers (David Peters), each a reflection of his warmth and wisdom. He celebrated every milestone in their lives, leaving a legacy of support and love that will echo through generations.

His joys in life were enriched by family, including his step-father, Edward Danny Berry; sisters, Elaine Smathers Morgan (Mike) and Dawn Berry Conard (Robert); and in so many fond memories with those gone before him—his father, William Lloyd Smathers, Sr.; his mother, Margaret Willie Greenarch Berry; his sister, Margaret Louise Smathers; his brothers, William Lloyd Smathers, Jr. and Terry Lee Smathers; and Larry Morris Erwin; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. Though some have preceded him in passing, Ronnie’s memories of them nurtured both his strength and tenderness.

Ronnie’s story is not contained solely in the marks he left on the world, but in the individual moments—every kind word, every embrace, every laughter shared around the family table or under the Carolina sky. His steadfast nature and genuine compassion made him a rock for so many; his gentle humor brought light even to the darkest days.

A private Celebration of Life service will be held for family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Ronnie on Saturday, August 8, 2026. This event is an opportunity to reflect on a life lived with love, to share stories, and to honor the enduring spirit Ronnie leaves behind.

Though Ronnie Lloyd Smathers has departed from this earth, his legacy endures—in the family he nurtured, the friendships he treasured, and the kindnesses he offered so freely. We hold his memory close, grateful for the light he brought to our lives and the example he set for us all.

The care of Mr. Smathers has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Candler.

Patricia Fayssoux McMahan

Patricia Fayssoux McMahan, born on March 21, 1951, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at her home in Candler, North Carolina, on May 26, 2026. Patricia’s life was a testament to compassion, dedication, and love, traits that guided her through an inspiring career and a fulfilling personal life.

She made a profound impact as a phlebotomist, then continued her service as a Certified Nursing Assistant and medical assistant. Her commitment to healthcare and patient care reflected her deeply caring nature and genuine desire to make a positive difference in the lives of those around her.
