☀️ And that’s a wrap on summer!

The end of summer might mean back-to-school routines, cooler days, and fewer water tables…but at CBC, outside play isn’t just a summer activity.

We know how important movement, exploration, and outdoor play are for child development. Running through the grass, playing with water, exploring new environments, and simply having space to MOVE can create natural opportunities to build gross motor skills, communication, social interaction, independence, sensory exploration, and play skills.

🧸 Can ABA look like play? Absolutely.

Some of the most meaningful learning opportunities happen when a child is already engaged, interested, and having fun.

Play-based learning can create natural opportunities to practice communication, social interaction, thinking skills, independence, and everyday skills—all while following the child's interests and building on their motivation.

This week's CBC Fieldwork in Action resource explores what purposeful, play-based teaching can look like and highlights research examining play-based approaches with autistic children.

This resource was developed as part of BCBA supervised fieldwork at CBC.

We want our future BCBAs learning how to understand research, but also how to translate that research into information that families and communities can actually use.

That's professional development with a purpose. 💚

❤️ The people who make CBC, CBC.

As we head into Labor Day, we want to recognize the people behind the work.

At CBC, “going above and beyond” can look a little different. Sometimes it means getting covered in shaving cream. 😂 Sometimes it means heading into the woods, running through the grass, dressing up for a theme day, or finding a way to turn an ordinary moment into something a child will remember.

To our CBC team: enjoy your well-earned day off tomorrow. ❤️ You deserve it.

Happy Labor Day from Community Behavior Consulting!

Community. Justice. Joy. Compassion.

🎳 Learning is right up our alley!

What looks like a simple game can create opportunities to practice so many valuable skills: gross motor coordination, motor planning, turn-taking, waiting, following directions, social engagement, communication, cheering on peers, and trying something new.

And one of our favorite parts? The activity could be adapted so that children with different abilities and support needs could participate alongside their peers. ❤️

🎳 Three locations. Lots of bowling pins. So many opportunities to learn.

We are excited that we have an opportunity to add a BCBA due to many RBTs wanting to join our team!

⭐ CBC Fieldwork in Action: Reinforcement vs. Preference

"He LOVES iPad, so that's his reinforcer."

Maybe. 😉

One of the most important distinctions in behavior analysis is the difference between something being preferred and something actually functioning as reinforcement.

A preference is something a person likes, wants, or chooses.

Reinforcement is defined by what happens to behavior: if the consequence increases the future likelihood of the behavior, it functioned as reinforcement.

That distinction trying to teach new skills.

This week's community resource was created through BCBA supervised fieldwork at CBC to help make an important behavioral concept easier for families, educators, and professionals to understand and use.

Because developing future BCBAs shouldn't just benefit CBC—it should create more behavioral knowledge throughout our community. 💚

Save this one for the next time you're trying to figure out why a "reward" isn't working!
