Cheryl Koeppl

Cheryl “Cheri” Koeppl, age 68, of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at her home.

She was born on July 29, 1958, in Pittsburgh, a daughter of the late Walter and Joann (Werner) Brookfield. Cheri had lived in Canonsburg for the past 20 years and was strong in her Lutheran faith. She attended Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, Minnesota, and was a devoted mother and homemaker.

Cheri, or “C” as her family and close friends affectionately called her, was known for her endearing nature, beautiful red hair and the unmistakable personality that went along with it. She enjoyed a good movie and almost all animals, especially cats. She will be remembered most for her love for her family and the special place she held in the lives of those who knew her.

Left behind to cherish her memory are her three beloved children, Joseph (Alysia) Koeppl of Cecil Township, Laura Caplan of Baldwin-Whitehall, and James Koeppl of Canonsburg; her grandchildren, Brady and Tyler Caplan, and Shiloh and Stella Koeppl; and her sister, Deborah (Craig) Scott of Meadowlands, and nieces Jackie Winnie, and Chrissy Zamary.

Friends will be received from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Friday, September 11, 2026, at Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra, LFD, Owner/Supervisor, 304 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, PA 15317.

A service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at the funeral home, with interment to follow immediately at Jefferson Memorial Park.

Joseph Anthony Battistone

Joseph Anthony Battistone, 84, of McMurray, formerly of Canonsburg, passed away peacefully Wednesday, September 2, 2026, in Ridgecrest of McMurray, surrounded by his son and loving family, after a brief battle with vascular dementia. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. Born January 28, 1942, in Muse, the fifth of six children to Domenico and Mary (Napolitano) Battistone, Joe lived a life marked by faith, kindness, devotion and steadfast love for his family. He lived every God given day to the fullest. He graduated in 1959 from Cecil High School then enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a seaman recruit on August 19, 1959, serving 4 years as a CS3 aboard the USS Stribling DD-867. Joe was proud of his military service and wore his Navy baseball cap everywhere he went. On June 12, 1965, Joe married the love of his life, Eileen O'Ross, with whom he shared 59 years of marriage before her passing September 7, 2024. Joe lovingly cared for Eileen throughout her years-long battle with dementia. Together Joe and Eileen raised 2 children, Matthew and Renee. He was a faithful member of Corpus Christi Parish (St. Mary's Church) in Cecil, and a former member of Holy Rosary Church in Muse. Joe's faith was important to him; he leaned on it in times of struggle. Joe spent his working years as a respected substation coordinator for West Penn Power, retiring in 2004 after 37 years of service. When not working, Joe enjoyed tending to his large garden and, along with Eileen, spent hours canning the fruits of his harvest. What wasn’t canned was generously shared with family and friends. He also enjoyed woodworking in his shed during the summer months and learned most of his skills from his longtime friend and neighbor, Terry. Joe was proud of his Italian heritage. He lovingly carried on the traditions of w**e, sausage, and pasta making passed down from his parents, Domenico and Mary. Every fall, without fail, family members would gather first in Domenico's basement in Muse then later in Joe's own basement on O'Hare Road in Canonsburg to crush and press the grapes or make delicious Italian sausage. Joe always made sure there was plenty of homemade sausage for the annual Battistone family reunions, and you could count on a nice glass of w**e whenever you visited. With these labors of love came many laughs and an abundance of love that will live on in the hearts of Joe's entire family. Joe was a member and former treasurer of the Muse Independent Italian Club, where he helped with fish fries and tripe and spaghetti dinners. Thursday nights were reserved for bowling with his son where he often held the position of league president and captain of his team. Afterwards, Joe and his son would share a few beers and camaraderie at the Muse Italian Club with their large circle of friends. Joe had an immense love for his grandchildren, Matthew and Angelina. He and Eileen supported them in every venture, never missing a soccer game or dance recital. He looked forward to fish Fridays with Angelina, followed by spending Saturdays with Matthew, which often led to late morning naps. These special moments spent with their grandfather are priceless reminders of his never-ending love for them. Left to cherish his memory are his devoted and loving son and daughter-in-law, Matt and Joliene and their children, Matthew and Angelina, of Finleyville; daughter, Renee (Mark) Linn of Florida; sister Mary (Norman, deceased) Bourg of McMurray, formerly of Muse; Frank (Donna) Battistone of Bryant, Ark.; brother-in-law, Ed O'Ross of California; and many nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews too numerous to mention, who will all miss their uncle terribly. Also, surviving are many other family members and friends who all played an important role in Joe's life. In addition to his parents, Domenico and Mary, and his beloved wife, Eileen, Joe was preceded in death by his sister, Anna, who died in 1939; his loving brothers and sisters-in-law, Carl (Ruth) Battistone, and Dominick (Rochelle) Battistone; in-laws, John and Marian O'Ross; nephew, Jeffrey Battistone; a niece, Lisa Battistone Brown and her husband, Chris; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Christopher Ruane

Christopher Michael Ruane, 55, of Canonsburg, passed away unexpectedly on September 1st, 2026. He was the loving husband of Barbara Ann Ruane. Together, they shared 30 years of marriage.

Born and raised in Roaring Brook Township, Chris was the son of the late Thomas F. Ruane and Pauline A. Ruane. He attended Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where he met the love of his life, Barb. They moved to Canonsburg, where they raised their three children, Maleia, Maddie, and Braeden, along with their three dogs, Cali, Luna, and River.

Chris worked at PNC Bank for 12 years, most recently as a Senior Software Engineering Manager and Vice President. Before joining PNC, Chris built a lengthy career in technology and software development, holding positions with the U.S. Department of Energy/OST Global, MedExpress, West Penn Allegheny Health System, CapitalBase, Celerity Innovation Center, and Eaton Corporation.

Chris was the epitome of a family man. His wife and children were his pride and joy, and he made sure they knew it. He was there for every sporting event, graduation, drift event, and milestone he could be. If someone needed help, Chris was there, no questions asked. If there was a problem to solve, Chris was the guy you called. He maintained a close bond with his three siblings and helped care for his father and mother in their final years.

Chris loved bringing people together. He enjoyed hosting holidays and cooking for family and friends, and there was always a place at his table for someone else.

Chris's faith was an important part of who he was and how he lived his life. He faithfully attended Mass each Sunday and made sure his children were raised in the Catholic faith. As an active member of St. Patrick Roman Catholic Parish, he participated in the Catholic Men's Club and volunteered at the fish fry every Friday during Lent and at the Canonsburg Fourth of July Parade. On Saturday mornings, he joined other parishioners for breakfast and discussions about the Bible readings for the following Sunday.

Chris also served as a Eucharistic minister to the homebound, bringing Communion to those unable to attend Mass. He treasured those visits and would often spend hours talking with the people he served. Through his faith, he found not only a deeper relationship with God, but a community of people who became an important part of his life.

Music was another great love of Chris's life. He played guitar and, for a time, performed with a local band. He was always ready to pick up his guitar and play for family and friends. A lifelong fan of the Grateful Dead, Chris later became an enthusiastic fan of Dead & Company, traveling twice to Las Vegas to see them perform at the Sphere. Those experiences deepened his appreciation for John Mayer, whose music Chris enjoyed teaching himself to play guitar. He also loved bluegrass and traveled to Colorado for a bluegrass festival.

Chris also found happiness outdoors. He loved hiking and camping, often roughing it with his son and at least one of their dogs by his side. He enjoyed hiking through the Allegheny National Forest and the Laurel Highlands. He completed two UltraTrek hikes, one at Bear Creek Mountain, Pennsylvania, and the other at Lake Rickabear, New Jersey. His ideal long-weekend getaway was a trip to the mountains, where he could pitch a tent, unplug from everyday life, and enjoy the peace and solitude of nature.

Above all, Chris will be remembered for the way he showed up for the people in his life, with love, loyalty, generosity, and an unwavering willingness to help. Whether for his family, his friends, his church, or someone simply in need, Chris could always be counted on.

He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Burkett-Ruane; his three children, Maleia A. Ruane and her partner, Kyle E. Lutz, Maddie R. Ruane and her partner, Ilias Christodoulou, and Braeden T. Ruane; his three siblings, Thomas J. Ruane and his wife, Nadine, of Dunmore, Pennsylvania, Kelly A. Leisman and her husband, Edward, of Fort Myers, Florida, and Trish Iellimo and her husband, Santino, of Oakmont, Pennsylvania; his 10 nieces and nephews, Sarah, Tommy, Taylor, and Patrick Ruane, Riley Kempton and her husband, Sean, Ben Velesig and his wife, Jozzie, Alex Velesig and his wife, Cheyenne, Zoey Velesig, Noah Burkett, and Josiah Burkett and his partner, Gabby Ciccone-DeLuca; and his four great-nieces and great-nephews, Marina and Chloe Kempton, Jordan Ruane, and Flynn Velesig.

He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas F. Ruane; his mother, Pauline A. Ruane; his nephew, Joshua P. Leisman; and his beloved beagle, Cali.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to prostate cancer research at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Gwen E. Bushko

Gwen E. Gladfelter Bushko, 71, of Houston, passed away peacefully at her home on Monday, August 31, 2026.

Born August 4, 1955, Gwen was the daughter of the late Spurgeon and Doris Gladfelter. She grew up in York, Pennsylvania, graduated from York Vo-Tech in 1973, and was raised in The Salvation Army community, where her parents were actively involved.

Gwen married the love of her life, Greg Bushko, on July 14, 1973, beginning a marriage that would span 53 years. As a young couple, they lived in Connecticut while Greg served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Nautilus. They later returned to the Canonsburg area, where they raised their sons, Justin and Michael, and built a life centered around family, friends, and faith.

Gwen spent much of her career caring for and helping others. She worked for 16 years at McMurray Hills Manor as a nurse's aide and office manager and 16 years with Apria Healthcare in medical billing. She later served as activities director at Hawthorne Woods, where she enjoyed helping residents stay active and enjoy life. Gwen finished her career in medical billing at St. Clair Hospital, where she retired.

After marrying Greg, Gwen embraced the Orthodox faith and became an active member of St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church in Canonsburg. She participated in the Ladies Altar Society for many years, including serving as its president, and treasured the friendships and community she found there.

Gwen was outgoing, kind and generous. She made friends easily, would talk to anyone, and rarely met a stranger. She was always willing to help and genuinely wanted to know how you were feeling, and often, what you wanted to eat. Caring for people came naturally to her.

She loved a good story, especially stories about children's escapades, and appreciated a good joke. Gwen enjoyed cards, bingo, bowling, camping, yard sales and bargain shopping. She particularly enjoyed the Chartiers Senior Center Card Club and was also involved with the Red Hat Society.

Gwen loved bringing people together and never passed up an opportunity to celebrate a birthday or have a gathering for family and friends. For more than 40 years, Fourth of July meant a party at the Bushko home, complete with backyard barbecues, family and friends. Many other celebrations took place in “Gwen's Party Room.” Gwen and Greg also enjoyed playing cards, bowling in a league, camping and visiting with friends throughout their 53 years together.

Gwen especially treasured being “Baba” to her granddaughters, Alisabeth and Hope. She loved spending time with them and was always finding crafts and projects they could enjoy together.

Gwen is survived by her husband, Greg Bushko; sons, Justin and Michael; daughter-in-law, Christina; granddaughters, Alisabeth and Hope; and her sister, Cathy J. Putman.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Spurgeon and Doris Gladfelter; siblings, Michael, Dennis, and Gloria.

She also leaves behind many beloved nieces, nephews and cousins, as well as a wide circle of family and friends who were an important part of her life. For Gwen, family extended well beyond the walls of her home, and she treasured the friendships and relationships she built throughout her life.

Family and friends will be received Tuesday, September 8, 2026, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Orthodox Church, 601 Boone Avenue, Canonsburg, PA 15317. Catherine M. Lemon

Catherine "Kate" Lemon, 82, of Muse, passed away Wednesday, August 26, 2026, in Canonsburg Hospital with her family by her side. She was born November 6, 1943, in Muse, a daughter of the late Alfredo and Emilia DelVecchio DeGenova Lucrezi.

Kate lived her entire life in Muse. She was employed at Canonsburg General Hospital for many years until her retirement. Kate enjoyed going to the Meadows Casino and watching movies on the Hallmark channel. Most of all, she enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Kate was Catholic by faith and was a member of St. Oscar Romero Parish. Kate was also a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Muse Italian Independent Club.

On October 5, 1964, she married Daniel "Juice" Lemon, who passed away November 22, 2021 after 57 years of marriage. Left behind to cherish her memory are her two sons, Alfred "Alfie" (Jamie) Lemon of Muse, and Daniel Lemon Jr. of Muse; grandchildren, Jessie (Neil) Goettmann, Joshua (Nicole) Lemon and Daniel (Marissa) Lemon III; great-grandchildren, Caiden (Jayla), Jacob, Abel, Luca and Ryan Goettmann, and Sullivan and Emilia Lemon; a sister, Valia (Chuck) DeVitis of Desert Hot Springs, CA; and many nieces and nephews. Deceased, in addition to her parents and her husband, are sisters, Rose Roman and Milda "Muzz" Bernardi; brothers Frank "Little Boy" DeGenova and Guglealmo DeGenova; and daughter-in-law Charlene Ozarowski.

Rose Marie Lawrence

Rose Marie Lawrence, 90, a lifelong resident of Strabane, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.

Born June 20, 1936, in Strabane, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rozalia Bobnar Progar. A 1954 graduate of Chartiers High School and a 1955 graduate of Penn Commercial College, Rose Marie worked as a stenographer at I.N.A. for seven years before dedicating her life entirely to raising her family. She was a faithful member of St. Patrick Church, SNPJ Lodge 138, KSKJ St. Jerome Lodge 153, and the Slovene Women Union in Strabane. Deeply proud of her Slovenian heritage, she was also an avid bowler and polka dancer who served as a constant source of care and comfort to all who knew her.

She leaves behind her loving husband, Robert Lawrence, whom she married on July 1, 1961. She is also survived by her six children: Robert (Jan) Lawrence of Canonsburg, Karen (Ryan) Brumbaugh of Canonsburg, Becky (Mike) Mangione of McCandless, Michael (Annie) Lawrence of Chardon, OH, Ken Lawrence of Strabane, and Melissa (Dan) McCormack of Virginia Beach, VA; 11 cherished grandchildren: Alec and Ian (Marta) Brumbaugh, Mary and Jordan (Danielle) Mangione, Robert and Erin Lawrence, Mikey, Amelia, and Anthony Lawrence, and Maeve and Kenna McCormack; as well as several nieces and nephews. Deceased in addition to her parents, are her brothers, Joseph (Amelia), William (Veronica), Anthony (Thelma), and Edward (Marie) Progar.

Friends and family will be received on Saturday, September 12, from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. at Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra LFD owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg. A blessing service will be held immediately following at 11:30 a.m. in the funeral home.

Ann Louise Miles

Ann Louise “Annie” Miles, 87, of Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on August 21, 2026-her 87th birthday.

Born August 21, 1939, Ann lived a life centered around faith, family, creativity, and love. She was a woman who found joy in the simple things and had a special gift for making ordinary moments memorable.

Ann was married to her beloved husband, Larry, for 65 wonderful years. Their marriage was one of the greatest priorities in both of their lives. They were truly best friends, and their love and devotion to one another was an example to their entire family. They built a life together filled with love, laughter, auctions, and countless memories.

She was a loving mother to Scott (Shelly), Christopher, Kelly (Tam), and Heather (Bill). Ann was a proud grandmother to 13 grandchildren and was also blessed with 17 great-grandchildren, who brought her tremendous joy.

Some of the family's favorite memories will always be the beach vacations to Topsail Island, North Carolina, and the excitement of Christmas morning. Ann had a wonderful sense of humor and a creative spirit, often finding unique treasures at auctions and flea markets. Many of those treasures became unforgettable Christmas gifts-especially the collection of fun musical instruments she loved finding and giving to her grandchildren.

Ann was creative long before Pinterest ever existed. She had a natural talent for making things beautiful and could turn an ordinary gathering into something special. Thanksgiving was one of the best examples. Her family will always remember the enormous Thanksgiving table, beautifully decorated with the kind of creativity and attention to detail that could rival Martha Stewart herself.

She loved music, played the piano and sang in the choir. She also had a talent for baking and was known for creating beautiful wedding cakes. She had a servant's heart and volunteered with the Washington City Mission. Professionally, Ann worked as a patient activity coordinator at Canonsburg Hospital, where she became known to many as “Annie.”

Her faith was an important part of her life. She loved the Psalms, especially the 23rd Psalm, and carried her faith with her throughout her life. Her family finds comfort in knowing that the God she trusted is now welcoming her home.

Ann's life was full of love, laughter, creativity, and devotion to the people she cherished most. She leaves behind a family who will carry her memory forward in countless traditions, stories, recipes, photographs, and family gatherings. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren will remember the fun, the laughter, the surprises, and the special way she made each of them feel loved.

She was preceded in death by her sons, Christopher and Scott; her parents; her brother, Richard; her in-laws; and her sister-in-law, Sandy.

Ann's earthly life may have ended on her birthday, but she will be lovingly remembered, and forever cherished.

Mario Mullig

Former Observer-Reporter journalist and WJPA broadcaster

Mario M. Mullig of Canonsburg, a former business editor and business writer for the Washington Observer-Reporter, died Saturday, August 22, 2026, with his family by his side.

Mario was born in Canonsburg on August 9, 1927, a son of Joseph and Augusta Cargnello Mullig, and lived in Canonsburg most of his life.

He was the devoted husband of the former Virginia Miklic of Washington. They were married on July 22, 1967, in St. Patrick Church in Canonsburg. Mario was a 1946 graduate of Canonsburg High School and a 1947 graduate of Ide-Paulin School of Announcing in Pittsburgh.

Using the professional name Bob Coleman, Mario worked as a radio announcer and disc jockey at WCVI in Connellsville and WKIN and WACB in Kittanning. In 1955, Mario joined WJPA in Washington and was the host of “Midnight Merry-Go-Round.” He also served as disc jockey at numerous teenage dances throughout the Washington area.

He started working for the Observer Publishing Co. in 1965 as a reporter. From 1960 until 1972, he also served as information director for Citizens Library. Mario left the O-R in 1972 to become the communications director for the McGraw-Edison Power Systems Division, headquartered in Canonsburg. He was in charge of employee publications, the Canonsburg plant “Reporter” and the division-wide magazine, “MEPSCOPE.” In 1979, he rejoined the O-R as a copy editor. From 1986 to 1997, he was a business editor and business writer. He concluded his career with the O-R, working part time as a layout editor and librarian until his retirement in 2009.

Mario was an active member of St. Patrick Church, Canonsburg. He was chosen to serve as one of its first lectors in 1955. In addition to serving as a lector until 2015, he and his wife, Virginia, also served as Eucharistic ministers, bringing Communion to St. Patrick Church’s shut ins.

Mario was a third-degree member of Canonsburg Council 3291, Knights of Columbus, for more than 50 years. In addition to serving as Grand Knight of Council 3291, he also served a term as a district deputy for the Knights of Columbus district that included the Canonsburg, Washington, Burgettstown and Crafton Councils.

In addition to his wife of 59 years, Virginia, he is survived by seven children: Michael (Donna) of North Huntingdon, Marianne Taich of Tampa, Maureen (Brian) Sullivan of Chicago, Mont (Laurie) of Atlanta, Robert of Chicago, Suzanne (Olen) Scott of Denver, Colorado, and Amy (Craig) Antonio of Peters Township; 15 grandchildren and several great- grandchildren. Also surviving are one niece, Carol (Regis) D’Angelo of Pittsburgh, and nephew Steven Germadnik.

His first wife, Mary Jane Miller Mullig, died in 1965. Also deceased are his brother, Isadore (Izzy), and five sisters, Ernesta DelCorso, Cynthia Germadnik, and Lulu, Louise and Valentia Mullig.

The two most important things in Mario’s life were his family and his faith. While we will miss him terribly, we are thankful that he is reunited with his siblings and parents and is now with God.

The family would like to give special thanks to the assisted living staff at Ridgecrest of McMurray and Concordia Hospice for the care and comfort they provided Mario with during the past few months.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Little Sisters of the Poor, Pittsburgh, or Tunnel to Towers Foundation, Staten Island, N.Y.

Family and friends are welcome from 4-8 pm on Tuesday, August 25th, at Salandra Funeral and Cremation Services, Inc., Joseph P. Salandra LFD owner/supervisor, 304 West Pike Street Canonsburg. Departing prayers will be recited on Wednesday, August 26th at 9:40am and the Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 26th at 10:00am. Friends attending mass should meet at the church. The burial will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery.

Fred D. Caruso

Fred Daniel Caruso, 83, passed away Friday August 14th, 2026, at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA. He was born on March 3rd, 1943 in Canonsburg Hospital, a son of the late Fred A. Caruso and Sophie Gromacki Caruso, and was a brother to his late sister Patricia Caruso Vinisky and brother James Caruso. Fred was also the brother to his younger sister, Kathy Caruso Simpson.

Fred graduated from Canon McMillan High School and attended the universities of West Virginia and California State, where he received his degree in Education.

Fred later served in the United States Army achieving the rank of Sergeant. After his Military service he returned home and began his career as a teacher in the Canon McMillan School District, spending most of his years teaching at the high school level.

He met his wife, Joanne C. Caruso, while teaching and the two were married in August of 1969.

Fred enjoyed bowling, playing cards, golfing and shooting pool with his son, grandkids and friends. He and his wife enjoyed traveling, making yearly trips to Florida and Arizona.

He is survived by his son, Darren F. Caruso of Beaver, PA, and his two grandsons, Zackary M, Caruso and Andrew J. Caruso, along with several other family members and friends who will miss him.
