Apologies for the double post today, but we have an important announcement and reminder.

If your child has insurance through the Georgia Medicaid CMO CareSource, and possibly the other Georgia Medicaid CMOs (Amerigroup and Peach State), you may receive a letter in the mail informing you that Lynnda Campbell's contract is not being renewed.

As a reminder, Lynnda retired earlier this year, and all our current providers are in-network with Georgia Medicaid and all three CMOs. As such, please don't be alarmed if you receive such a letter. Of course, if you have any other questions or concerns, don't hesitate to reach out to us either!

The Georgia heat is no joke! ☀️

Stay safe this summer by staying in the know about the signs of heat exhaustion. Heat exhaustion occurs when your body gets too hot, usually when you are exposed to high temperatures and humidity for an extended amount of time.

Heat exhaustion is more common in children younger than 4 years old and older adults. Some medications can also increase risk so be sure to ask your provider if this is something you need to be aware of.

If heat exhaustion is not controlled, it can lead to heatstroke which is life-threatening and needs immediate medical attention.

To prevent heat exhaustion, try these tips:
☀️ Wear loose fitting and lightweight clothing
☀️ Use sun protection
☀️ Stay hydrated!
☀️ Know what the side effects of your medications are
☀️ Never leave anyone in a parked car
☀️ Avoid high physical activity during the hottest part of the day

Happy Summer everyone! ☀️😎🌊 We hope everyone had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend this past weekend!

We cannot start the summer without talking about Tinea Versicolor! This is a common fungal infection we see in teens and young adults that is usually more obvious in the summertime. The skin that is infected does not tan like the rest of your skin so it creates a patchy looking rash.

Treatment is usually topical antifungals, but if you have questions or are concerned, don't hesitate to give us a call and schedule a visit with one of our providers!

Good afternoon DV Pediatrics families, friends, and our local community!

We want to make sure everyone is aware that there have been confirmed cases of measles in a number of our local emergency rooms. As such, we want to remind everyone how measles presents. The symptoms to look for are high fever (above 102° F) and the "Three Cs": cough, coryza (runny nose), and conjunctivitis (red, watery eyes). While the rash is the most distinct symptom, it is often one of the last ones to present, and the disease is contagious up to 4 days before the rash develops. If you are concerned your child may have the measles, please call us immediately at 770-704-0057.

We also urge everyone to double check your child's MMR vaccination status. If your child is behind, it is not too late for them to receive the vaccine for protection!

If you want to schedule a visit for your child to get the MMR vaccine, or if you need help confirming your child's immunization status, or have any other questions or concerns, we are happy to help! Just give us a call at 770-704-0057.

Piggybacking off our post from Monday, we thought it would be a good idea to discuss recommended limits for screen time, as they have become less straightforward, especially since the Covid-19 pandemic.

This graphic is a simplified list of recommendations mostly gathered from the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry (AACAP). Again, these recommendations are simplified, but you can check out their detailed recommendations here: https://www.aacap.org/AACAP/Families_and_Youth/Facts_for_Families/FFF-Guide/Children-And-Watching-TV-054.aspx

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) goes into further detail, discussing that the amount of time shouldn't be the only consideration: https://www.aap.org/en/patient-care/media-and-children/center-of-excellence-on-social-media-and-youth-mental-health/qa-portal/qa-portal-library/qa-portal-library-questions/screen-time-guidelines/?srsltid=AfmBOop7EqpSJNWQxUxr2VTj9eU-EWdVBVU6o7bpcuc08BslReAyzDt8

It is almost summer time! While school is out, it is important to find ways to entertain your children that do not revolve around screens and electronics. Here are some fun activities to try to help reduce screen time this summer.

If you snap a picture of your child doing any of these activities, or anything else super fun this summer, we'd be thrilled if you tag us!

As we round out Food Allergy Awareness week, it is only fitting to talk about EpiPens!

An EpiPen is a life saving device for someone who is suffering an anaphylactic reaction. Anaphylaxis is a severe, rapidly progressing, and potentially life-threatening systemic allergic reaction that affects multiple body systems simultaneously. Some symptoms may include: skin reactions such as hives, itching, or flushed/pale skin, low blood pressure, constriction of the airways or a swollen tongue or throat, a weak and rapid pulse, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness or fainting.

If someone you know has a severe allergy and is experiencing these symptoms, an EpiPen could save their life. This diagram shows how to properly use an EpiPen or EpiPen jr. We recommend saving this to your phone in case you need it in the future.

When in doubt, use an EpiPen! Even if you are unsure if someone is having an allergic reaction, it is best to use their EpiPen anyways. The longer an allergic reaction goes without treatment, the harder it is to get control of.

Check out this great video for more information and instructions on EpiPens https://youtu.be/EN83hen4D-Y?si=haZdalYLMn36P4ZV

Good morning DV Pediatrics families and friends!

Please be aware that we have some utility work being done around our office today, which is disrupting our internet service, which is likely impacting our phone lines and our ability to provide service to you all.

We do have a backup method for being able to continue to field calls, but at a reduced volume. If we miss your call, you may continue trying to call, or you may leave us a voicemail and we will do our best to get back to you as soon as possible.

As a reminder, while we prefer you to call to schedule same-day sick appointments, we also do our best to accommodate walk-in sick appointments. Although, if you show up between 11 AM and noon, we may ask you to come back once we return from lunch at 1 PM.

We appreciate your patience and apologize for the inconvenience.
