Star Care at Renaissance

Definition of a Developmental Disability: A severe, chronic disability of a person which is caused by a mental or physical impairment, or a combination of both, such as mental retardation, cerebral palsy, epilepsy, or autism and is manifested before the age of 22 and is likely to continue indefinitely. This can include a brain injury that has occurred before the age of 22

. It can also include any other "related condition" that mimics the effects of an intellectual disability, as determined by the Department of Human Services. Population Served: Most of our residents are at a severe/profound level of functioning . They also have complex medical needs such as seizure disorder, severe Cerebral Palsy, respiratory inefficiencies, and thermoregulation problems. This means we provide a high level of care to individuals who need assistance with all areas of daily living, as well as provide 24 nursing care. Types of Clinical Care routinely provided:
-- Tracheostomy Care
-- Medication Management
-- PICC/Central line care
-- Ostomy Care
-- Enteral Nutrition
-- Oxygen Therapy and Monitoring
-- Seizure Management
-- Traumatic Brain Injury Services

-- Wound Prevention and Care for all stages
-- Post-Surgical Care
-- Respiratory Therapy
-- Orthopedic Services including seating and mobility
-- Physical, Occupational, and Speech Therapies
-- Vision, Audiological and Dental Services

Age of Residents: The individuals we serve range in age from birth to late adulthood. Our facility becomes their home, and as long as they require the services we provide, there is no need for them to "age out" of our placement. Medical Director: Our Medical Director is Dr. Kenneth Krock of the Graham Medical Group of Canton, IL. He is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics. He serves on the Board at Graham Hospital, and has many connections with OSF St. Francis Medical Center, as well as the Children's Hospital of Illinois in Peoria. He works diligently to ensure parents and family are always involved in their loved one's care, and is known for his commitment to open communication with families and the necessary specialists. Direct Care Staff: RNs, LPNs, CNAs, DSPs, and Helping Hands take care of our residents 24 hours a day. They are dedicated to ensuring each individual is happy, healthy and at home! Referral Sources and Service Partners: We receive referrals and requests for our services from a wide variety of reputable hospitals and organizations such as the Children's Hospital of Illinois @ Peoria, the Rehab Institute of Chicago, Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, the Department of Specialized Care for Children, and the Department of Children and Family Services. We also receive requests for our services form other Intermediate Care Facilities for the Developmentally Disabled due to these facilities' inability to care for a temporary or permanent skilled medical need. Location: We are located in the heart of Illinois, in the small but growing community of Canton. We are fortunate to have the advantages of nearby specialty hospitals, doctors, and clinics, while still being "small town" enough for the community to embrace our residents and welcome them into their schools, workshops, restaurants, parks, churches, and community events. Educational Services: The local Canton school developed a program in the nearby middle school to meet the needs of our residents. All residents who are 3 to

We’re back with our department head spotlights. Today, we are featuring Rita McCone.

Rita is our Administrative Assistant. She has worked at Renaissance for 22 years! She started as a CNA, for 2 years then transitioned to Administrative Assistant. Among many other duties, Rita backs up our phone detail. If you’ve ever called and heard a sweet southern voice, it’s her!

Rita was born in Paris, Tennessee and moved to Big Sandy, Tennessee before moving to Illinois 30 years ago. She and her husband have one son, a daughter-in-law, one granddaughter and 4 dogs.

When not at work, Rita enjoys riding side-by-sides with her husband and fur babies.

Today’s department head spotlight is Devin Wilson.

Devin is the Clinical Supervisor of StarCare at Renaissance. She is from Ellisville, IL. She graduated from Spoon River Valley High School in 2008 before earning her LPN and RN degrees from Carl Sandburg College.

Devin began working at Renaissance in 2010, as a CNA, on the 300 wing and has worked her way into the Clinical Supervisor role. She took some time away to hone her skills and acquire more knowledge at another facility. Devin returned to Renaissance because she felt called back and is grateful for the opportunity to share the skills and experience she gained while away.

When she’s not at work, Devin enjoys spending time with her husband, Adam, and their two children. Whether they’re traveling, hunting, fishing, kayaking or riding their side-by-side, family time is always an adventure. She also loves working on her flower farm and spending time in the garden.

Devin says, “What I enjoy most about my role at Renaissance is helping others succeed. I am passionate about educating staff, mentoring nurses and encouraging personal and professional growth.”

Thank you, Devin, for your leadership, dedication and commitment to excellence. We are proud to have you on the Renaissance team!

Happy Monday, everyone! Today’s feature department head spotlight is Sarah Thompson.

Sarah is our Therapy Program Assistant Manager. She graduated from Lincoln Land Community College in 2007 with a Certificate in Occupational Therapy Assistant and an Associate in Applied Science. Sarah first started at Renaissance in 2012. She left in 2019 and returned in 2021. She became our Therapy Program Assistant Manager shortly thereafter.

Sarah lives here in Canton. She has 2 children and 2 adult step-children.

Sarah says, “I truly enjoy the spectrum of care at Renaissance. In a typical treatment day, I can go from a rehab-to-home patient to a pediatric patient to a long-term care geriatric patient. I am challenged, clinically, with all aspects of occupational therapy to provide the most appropriate care for the varying caseload. I enjoy getting to know the population I work with across all ages and supporting them in varying stages of life. I am glad to be working in the community I grew up in and to give back to this community.”

Sarah and her therapy team are an integral part of RCC. We are very thankful for their dedication to our patients!
