✨ Throw • Turn • Catch ✨

This simple movement challenge works on multiple developmental skills at once! As your kiddo throws the ball overhead, completes a full 360° body turn, and catches the ball, they are strengthening:

🧠 Bilateral Coordination – Using both sides of the body together in a coordinated way.

👀 Visual Tracking & Visual Processing – Following the ball through the air while maintaining awareness of body position.

⏱️ Timing & Motor Planning – Sequencing movements and predicting when and where the ball will land.

⚖️ Vestibular Processing – The spinning motion activates the vestibular system, supporting balance, body awareness, and postural control.

💪 Core Strength & Postural Stability – Maintaining an upright position while turning and preparing to catch.

🤸 Primitive Reflex Integration – Activities involving rotation, balance, and coordinated movement can support the integration of retained primitive reflexes such as the ATNR, TLR and STNR.

📍 Proprioception – Helping the body understand where it is in space during movement.

🎯 Hand-Eye Coordination – Coordinating visual information with motor responses for a successful catch.

🌟 Plus, it’s a great way to build focus, confidence, and body awareness while having fun!

Try it with different ball sizes, speeds, or directions to increase the challenge.

What looks like simple outdoor play is actually powerful sensory and neurological development in action. 💚

These kiddos found a stick on the trail and used it to push their balls while hiking — and in that moment, their brain and body were doing SO much work together.

🧠 OT Benefits Happening Here:

• Bilateral coordination — using both sides of the body together while walking and manipulating the stick
• Motor planning & praxis — figuring out how to move the ball while navigating uneven terrain
• Visual tracking & visual motor integration — keeping eyes on the moving ball and coordinating body movements
• Gross motor strengthening — core activation, shoulder stability, balance, and coordination during hiking and pushing
• Vestibular input — movement through space while walking over changing surfaces supports balance and spatial awareness
• Proprioceptive input — heavy work through the arms and body from pushing the stick and walking on trails helps regulate the nervous system
• Primitive reflex integration — activities like crossing midline, balance reactions, and coordinated movement patterns support maturation of retained reflexes such as STNR, ATNR, and TLR
• Executive functioning — problem-solving, attention, sequencing, and adaptability all happening naturally through play

Nature play is sensory-rich, regulation-supportive, and exactly the kind of meaningful movement kids’ brains crave. 🌲✨

Sometimes the best therapy tools aren’t toys at all… they’re found on the trail.

Dropping and kicking a ball while walking through the woods is SO much more than just play.

From an OT perspective, this activity supports:

⚽ Bilateral coordination — using both sides of the body together
⚽ Motor planning — learning how to sequence movement smoothly
⚽ Balance + postural control — especially on uneven terrain
⚽ Visual tracking — keeping eyes on a moving object while moving the body
⚽ Visual-motor integration — connecting what the eyes see with how the body responds
⚽ Proprioceptive input — heavy work through the legs and feet that helps with body awareness
⚽ Vestibular processing — movement and balance while navigating outdoor surfaces
⚽ Attention + focus — sustaining engagement while coordinating multiple skills at once
⚽ Crossing midline — important for reading, writing, and coordinated movement

Primitive reflexes being integrated through this type of movement can include:

🌿 ATNR (Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) through crossing midline and coordinated movement
🌿 STNR (Symmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex) through balance, posture, and eye-body coordination
🌿 TLR (Tonic Labyrinthine Reflex) through movement on varied terrain and postural control

Nature + movement + play = powerful nervous system support 💚

Sometimes the best developmental tools don’t look like therapy at all.
