✈️ Now THAT is a good news headline.

A plane carrying six doctors from Oakland went down in Central California, and thankfully, everyone onboard is safe. 🙌

Not every breaking news story has to have a bad ending. This one was worth sharing.

Glad to see all six walking away from this one. 👏✈️

🧠 “I know your face… but your name is GONE.” 😅

Sound familiar?

Forgetting someone’s name doesn’t necessarily mean you forgot the person. Your brain may still recognize their face, remember where you met, and even know what they do. You just can’t retrieve their name.

🤔 Why are names so hard?

Names are basically labels. A word like “dog” 🐶 connects to an entire network of information in your brain. A person’s name may have far fewer connections available to help you retrieve it.

👅 That frustrating “tip of my tongue” feeling is real. You know exactly WHO the person is, but your brain temporarily can’t access the name you’re looking for.

🧠 Areas within the temporal lobe play an important role in connecting familiar people with identifying information, including their names.

Name retrieval can also become more difficult with age, fatigue, stress, or simply not seeing someone very often.

So let’s settle this 😂👇

My TMZ Live interview. 🎥🎢

Here are a few clips from my live conversation with about the serious brain injuries reportedly associated with the X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California.

As an Atlanta neurosurgeon, I discussed how a high-velocity coaster’s rapid acceleration, deceleration and rotational forces may cause the brain to move within the skull, potentially stretching or tearing the bridging veins and causing a subdural hematoma.

But this conversation extends beyond neurosurgery.

From an engineering and safety-optimization perspective, we must study how a ride’s speed, restraint system, head support, abrupt directional changes and individual rider anatomy affect the forces transmitted to the brain and cervical spine.

Thrill rides will always involve movement and force. The question is whether their designs can be further optimized to reduce preventable neurological injuries.

TikTok to TMZ in 45 minutes. 🎥🎢

TMZ contacted me through TikTok, and less than 45 minutes later, I was live discussing the serious brain injuries reportedly associated with the X2 roller coaster at Six Flags Magic Mountain in California.

Here’s the reported timeline:

🎢 July 5, 2026: A 40-year-old rider suffered an acute subdural hematoma with brain compression and required emergency brain surgery.

🎢 July 11, 2026: A second rider, 25, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and also required emergency surgery.

🎢 July 12, 2026: X2 was closed following the two incidents.

🎢 June 23, 2022: Christopher Hawley, 22, rode X2 and reportedly sustained catastrophic head trauma. He died the following day, June 24, 2022.

🎢 2010: Hilda Farias, 28, died after riding X2. Reports indicated that an existing brain abnormality may have ruptured under the forces of the ride.

As a neurosurgeon, I explained how rapid acceleration and deceleration can stretch and tear the veins surrounding the brain, potentially causing a life-threatening subdural hematoma—even without an obvious external head injury.

Cold changes everything. 🥶

In Part 2, we examine another hypothetical question surrounding the Lindsay Clancy case:

How could someone’s core temperature fall into the low 80s, and how long could that take?

There is no universal timeline. A weather report alone cannot answer it.

Several factors determine how quickly the body loses heat:

❄️ The outside temperature
🌬️ Wind and overall exposure
🧊 Contact with cold or frozen ground
👕 How the person was dressed
💧 Whether the clothing or ground was wet
🩸 Trauma, blood loss, or shock
💊 Medications or substances affecting alertness and shivering
🧍 Body composition, health, movement, and length of exposure

The ground matters because direct contact pulls heat from the body through conduction. Clothing, insulation, exposed skin, and whether the person could move or shiver also significantly change the equation.

A core temperature in the low 80s represents severe, life-threatening hypothermia. At that point, consciousness, breathing, heart rhythm, reflexes, and neurologic function may all be profoundly affected.

From a neurosurgeon’s perspective, these environmental and physiologic factors must be considered alongside the traumatic injuries.

This is a discussion of medical possibilities, not a conclusion about the specific facts of the case.

I receive social media gifts pretty often, and most of them never make it onto my page.

Same operation. Different outcomes.

The procedure matters—but recovery is also shaped by what happens outside the operating room. These five measurable and potentially modifiable factors can influence pain, function, rehabilitation, and satisfaction after spine surgery:

1️⃣ Metabolic and nutritional health
The body heals on its reserves. Poorly controlled diabetes, smoking, obesity, low muscle mass, and nutritional deficiencies are linked to infection, hardware complications, and impaired fusion. Glycemic control, smoking cessation, and better nutrition provide concrete targets before surgery.

2️⃣ Mental and emotional readiness
Untreated anxiety or depression can heighten pain, disrupt sleep, reduce motivation, and make rehabilitation harder. Tools like the GAD-7 and PHQ-9 can identify concerns that may benefit from treatment before and after surgery. Patients with depression can still improve significantly after an appropriately indicated operation.

3️⃣ Commitment to rehabilitation
The work before surgery can pay off afterward. Exercise-based prehabilitation may improve strength, pain, disability, fear of movement, and early postoperative recovery. Education, physical conditioning, and an individualized plan are key.

4️⃣ Support system and social environment
Recovery rarely happens alone. Limited support is associated with longer hospital stays and discharge to a facility instead of home. Confirming home assistance and planning ahead can make recovery safer and smoother.

5️⃣ Sleep quality
Poor sleep can amplify pain, worsen mood, and drain the energy rehabilitation requires. Sleep can be tracked and optimized alongside the surgical plan—including screening for sleep apnea and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule.

A difficult recovery is not the patient’s fault, and positive thinking cannot overcome structural disease.

It means we treat the condition while identifying the factors that may help or hinder recovery. The mind and body were never separate.

Save this before surgery and discuss any concerns with your healthcare team.
