Here are 10 specific things I try to prioritize ๐
1๏ธโฃ Walk every day, even if itโs only 10โ20 minutes.
The biggest benefit comes from going from completely inactive to doing something. You donโt need to become an athlete.
2๏ธโฃ Donโt choose between cardio and weights. Do both.
They do different things for your body, and I make room for both in my week. ๐โโ๏ธ + ๐๏ธ
3๏ธโฃ Walk after your meals.
This is something Iโve incorporated into my life over the last several months. I try to walk after each meal, sometimes up to 3 times a day. ๐ถโโ๏ธ
Even on busy surgery days, I get my walk in. Those short walks help me feel energized and positive throughout a long day in the OR, and they add up toward my weekly activity goals.
4๏ธโฃ Make some of your cardio actually challenging.
Add periods where youโre breathing harder and talking becomes more difficult. Your heart and lungs need to be challenged too. โค๏ธ
5๏ธโฃ Strength train 2โ3 days a week.
Prioritize the big movements: squat, hinge, push, pull and carry. Maintaining muscle helps protect against frailty and loss of independence. ๐ช
6๏ธโฃ Practice standing on one leg.
Balance doesnโt maintain itself. Single-leg stands, heel-to-toe walking and controlled step-ups are simple ways to train it. โ๏ธ
7๏ธโฃ Keep your hips, ankles and spine mobile.
Practice movements you need in real life: getting off the floor, squatting, reaching overhead, rotating and stepping over objects.
8๏ธโฃ Donโt let your workout be your only movement.
Take the stairs. Park farther away. Walk while youโre on the phone. Do the yard work. Your total daily movement matters. ๐
9๏ธโฃ Get out of your chair throughout the day.
If youโve been sitting for an hour, stand up and move. Walk around the office, stretch or take a lap.
๐ Train for what you want to still do at 85.
Carry your groceries. Climb stairs. Get off the floor without help. Travel. Play with your grandkids. Drive. Live independently.
That last one is really the point.
Youโre not exercising just for what your body looks like today.
Youโre training for the life you want to be able to live decades from now
