Ever feel like an impulse is about to pull you under? 🌊

Let’s talk about Urge Surfing. It’s a mindfulness powerhouse for managing everything from doom-scrolling to snap reactions. Instead of fighting the urge or giving in, you treat the feeling like a wave in the ocean that you’re riding until it reaches the shore.

Research shows most urges peak and fade within 20 to 30 minutes if we don’t “feed” them. Think of it like a bell curve: it builds intensity, hits a crest, and then inevitably subsides. You don't have to act; you just have to wait.

To start surfing, notice where the urge lives in your body: maybe a tight chest or restless energy. Breathe into that space and observe it without judgment. Remember, you aren't the urge; you're the person watching it pass by.

It is totally normal to feel overwhelmed by a sudden impulse, but learning to sit through that temporary discomfort is where your real strength lives. You've got this!

One thing I love about summer in private practice is that it creates opportunities.

While some families are traveling, attending camps, or adjusting their schedules, other families are finally able to get in before the busy back-to-school season. It’s a great time to pull children off waitlists, support major life transitions, and help families get established before the school year begins.

The need for services never slows down. Summer just gives us more opportunities to serve.

Summer break is a total vibe, but losing school structure can definitely throw your mental health for a loop.

When the routine fades, our brains can feel a bit lost. Research shows that simple daily rhythms help regulate the nervous system, turning summer chaos into a true retreat. Keeping a steady pulse on your day is a total game-changer for reducing anxiety and staying grounded.

You don't need a rigid schedule to stay steady! Try these tiny anchors: swap scrolling for sunlight first thing to reset your internal clock, keep a consistent wake-up time, and send one quick text to a friend daily. These small wins protect your peace without stealing your summer freedom.

It’s totally normal to feel restless when life slows down. You aren’t failing at summer; your brain is just finding its new rhythm.

We see you navigating this transition, and it’s okay to take it one small step at a time.

If you need extra support this season, With A Child's Heart Behavioral Health Center is here for you. Head to our website to explore our services and get started through our secure client portal.

Supporting your child’s identity is about building a foundation of trust every single day.

Allyship starts at home. Research shows LGBTQ+ youth with at least one accepting adult in their life are significantly less likely to face severe mental health struggles. You don’t need all the answers right away; you just need to be willing to show up.

Start by listening without judgment: create a space where they feel heard, not interrogated. Take the lead on educating yourself about terminology so they don’t have to be your only teacher. Finally, affirm their identity by using their chosen name and pronouns; it’s one of the most powerful ways to say “I see you.”

It’s okay to have questions and learn as you go. What matters most is that your child knows you’re in their corner, and you’re doing a great job by being willing to grow with them.

Hey! Sometimes a child really will lead the way.

A child starts therapy, learns new skills, starts feeling better... and before you know it, Mom or Dad is looking for a therapist too.

And we love that for them and their kids.

Did you know a sniff of pine can reset a nervous system? 🌲 Nature’s scents are powerful grounding tools. Smelling damp earth or blooms helps kids anchor themselves, calming big emotions fast. Science says scent hits the amygdala, the brain's emotional center: a natural regulation hack! It’s okay to slow down. Visit our portal to book with With A Child's Heart Behavioral Health Center.

In child therapy, transitions can be hard.Ending the session means leaving the play, the connection, the routine, and sometimes the one space where they feel fully seen.

Those last 5 minutes usually aren’t about cleaning. They’re about the transition.
