G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center is proud to partner with the Jackson Heart Study Community Engagement Center (JHS-CEC). Representing JHS-CEC, Dr. Victor Sutton and Dr. Excel Fiemotonghan recently connected with the next generation of public health leaders, the Jackson Heart Study Scholars at the University of Southern Mississippi (USM) to inspire, educate, and support their growth as future leaders in public health and community-engaged research.

As the JHS Graduate Training and Education Center (GTEC), USM plays a vital role in preparing future researchers. Our team had the privilege of presenting on "The Art and Science of Community Engagement: Bringing Community & Science Together," supporting their professional development in community-engaged research, and emphasizing how translating scientific research into community action is essential for improving cardiovascular health and achieving true health equity.

We love strengthening our partnership with USM as we work together to empower these incredible scholars. Keep up the amazing work!

Dr. James Coleman, CEO of G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center, and Dawn Cuello, Director of Communications, traveled to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. in May to advocate for Community Health Centers and the patients/communities they serve in Mississippi. “Thanks to the leadership and support of the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), we were able to engage with national leaders, build meaningful connections, and gain valuable insight that will help strengthen healthcare access across Mississippi,” said Dr. Coleman. “G.A. Carmichael does not take these opportunities or relationships for granted. Every conversation, connection, and lesson learned will be brought back home with a purpose, to ensure the voices of our communities are heard and that the people we serve benefit from the knowledge, partnerships, and advocacy efforts gained through this experience.”

At G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center, we believe in recognizing the individuals who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe. Recently, our team took time to express our heartfelt appreciation to the local law enforcement officers and sheriff’s departments who serve and protect the residents of Greenwood, Belzoni, Yazoo City, Carthage, and Canton each day.

We would like to extend a special thank you to our outstanding site managers, Candace Thompson, Julia Lawson, Kadjehi Thompson, Kendall Morrison, Darrius Skinner, our CPO Joshua Knox, Business Development Officer Cassandra Brown, and our Director of Population Health Tasha Brown for taking the time to personally visit local agencies and deliver meals as a small token of our gratitude.

This week, Dr. James Coleman, CEO of G.A. Carmichael Family Health Center, and Dawn Cuello, Director of Communications, had the privilege of traveling to Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., to advocate for Community Health Centers and the patients/communities we proudly serve.
