I have been seeing a lot of styes lately, so here a few quick tips when you start getting that “something is not right” feeling:
1) Keep the eyelid surface clean (baby shampoo, eyelid wipes, antimicrobial sprays like “HypoChlor” or “Avenova”).
2) Apply lots of warm compresses throughout the day (preferably with a hot compress mask).
3) DON’T WAIT weeks/months until “it gets better on its own.” Once the stye hardens it becomes a lot more difficult to treat! A very hard stye may need injections or incisional surgery to be removed! SO DON’T WAIT AND CALL WITHIN THE 1ST WEEK OF SYMPTOMS.

This patient saw me today (Saturday evening) for a small scratch in his left eye. This scratch actually would not let him sleep at all last night (the cornea is incredibly sensitive!). Instead of going to the emergency room or waiting until Monday to see an eye doctor he called me and I was able to help him get back to normal. If you have an urgent eye problem, call me and I’ll do my best to take care of you! 470-642-2662

P.S. His left pupil has a defect which he was born with called an iris coloboma!

I often get asked “Dr. Garcia, when should I bring my kids in for an eye exam?” The answer is always “YESTERDAY!” Parents don’t realize how crucial it is to have their kids eyes checked by an optometrist or ophthalmologist as EARLY as possible. Shout out to our pediatricians and nurses who take on the task to screen out for major eye problems. However, they are NOT eye doctors and their screening tools will NEVER replace a comprehensive eye exam by an eye doctor. So if you’re a parent and have not taken your little ones to an eye doctor, PLEASE for their sake take them as soon as possible (I see kids of all ages, hint hint).
