We learned all kinds of things about the Connecticut in our America 250 lesson. The funniest story is about the reason Connecticut is called "The Nutmeg State". We celebrated nutmeg with a piece of pumpkin pie, but we are glad our pie did not have Connecticut nutmeg in it. Yankee Peddlers in the 1700s (traveling salesmen from Connecticut) traveled America selling all kinds of things including exotic spices. They carved fake nutmegs out of hardwood and sold them. By the time the buyer tried to use the spice, the peddler was long gone! We'll stick to real nutmeg around here!
